Windows 7 Graphics Performance Preview

The "Vista" moniker may not have been coined until then, but development was started a lot earlier, back when the beta versions were simply known as Longhorn (much like beta versions of XP were called Whistler). IIRC those codenames were eventually used for the server OS, but originally it applied to the desktop development too.

XP running for so long is one of the biggest headaches MS suffer no doubt. In some respects even if we had jumped straight to Windows 7 a lot of people just would not want to give up what they know. I run a business, spend a lot of software, guess what? We will be with XP for a long while yet!

Even though I'm an avid computer enthusiast etc when it comes to business there is nothing better than knowing things are stable and well proven.

The biggest problem (in the eyes of the OS user majority) is that Vista has not done anything better than XP. Not for the average computer user.

remember the huge hype surrounding win95? Thats what MS need again. Although I'm really not sure it will ever happen for any software again quite like that

what score did you get for the Windows ratings?

i heard they've been raised to 7.9 now

I get a 7.9 for Aero performance with my 8800GTX, although for some reason it only scores a 6.0 for gaming graphics:confused:. Only a 6.7 for my Q6600 at 3GHz too :( must be time to OC it a bit further!

Aero is less demanding on the GPU than games so allot of today's gfx card are capable at running Aero to its fullest extent 7.9.

Yeah it has... and guess what my 4.15GHz i7 gets? 7.6! still not full marks! Pretty crazy.

My tripple channel DDR3 RAM only gets 5.5 even though it completely crushes my Q9450 DDR2 system in bandwidth.

GTX 280 gets 7.9 for Aero performance, and 6.0 for gaming performance. Which is the same as above 8800GTX... go figure. Maybe it's testing it in 2D clocks and not 3D.

WD VelociRaptor gets 5.9.

I'd like to see what my SSD gets as SSD performance is meant to have improved a lot, but i've got my Vista install on it.

You should :)

I almost feel like using Win7 Beta 1 as my main OS when the 64-Bit version is out because of the speed. It's very good and stable for Beta, theres just some tiny problems i've found like WMP12 randomly pausing, the closing/opening windows animation not being quite as smooth as it should be, and some Source engine based games not working.

how do you get in on this windows 7 malarkey, im on Microsoft Connect but see no options there on my dashboard for Windows 7?

Beta 1 is not officially released until Jan 5th. But you can download it on torrent sites, and i dont think it's illigal to do that as it's just a 30 day trial (unless you get a key). Theres been reports that MS leaked it themselfs...

The only reason Vista has been ditched so quickly is because it has a bad reputation for some reason (some reason being people trying to run it on Pentium II's with 1GB of RAM)

true story

and 'it technicians' telling customers that 'vista is crap, and slow'

it's still very much illegal

I am personally overjoyed to see Vista's life span cut so short.

Windows Vista's life span isn't being cut short. The gap between Windows XP and Windows Vista was abnormal yet some people seem to think because Windows Vista was released around 6 years after Windows XP, the next operating system won't be released for another 6 years. Microsoft's normal routine practice of releasing an operating system is normally every 2 or 3 years so it actually puts the release of Windows 7 about on time. :)

Vista = the new millennium, I'm not the expert some of you guys are but that was certainly the impression I got when I first switched. In fact for various reasons I'm still running a dual boot with XP.

I'm sorry but Windows Vista is by no means the new Millennium and anyone that thinks so quite honestly needs to do there research. If Windows Vista was the new Millennium then Windows 7 wouldn't be taking the technologies and advancements of Windows Vista and moving them across. Windows Vista was a technology based release meaning a lot of the things that changed from Windows XP to Windows Vista were done under the bonnet / within the kernel. This basically resulted in, in some peoples opinions that the changes from switching from Windows XP to Windows Vista were maybe not so prominent and upfront from a user stand point of view. However, this does not make Windows Vista a failed release and unnecessary, far from it in actual fact. Windows Vista was an extremely important release in the Windows family and well needed.

One of the main problems with Windows Vista was it broke compatibility with a lot of things for various reasons. However, this is now mainly fixed thus we shouldn't experience any of the compatibility problems that we had with Windows Vista in Windows 7 since Windows 7 is just building on the same driver model that is within Windows Vista. :)

I like vista and have used it since release. However I have a second box used mainly for HDD space on a network and on slower systems it is much faster than vista ever is. Even on my current rig vista is still a lot slower than XP. However, its had nowhere near the number of updates XP had to make it as fast as it currently is.

nice thread - hopefullly w7 will be more capable at getting the most out of performance hardware

im looking forward to the improvements

Have to say i'm finding 7 a bit snappier than Vista (Only 2Gb ram mind)
and kinda liking it so far, some of the changes are subtle and others
just removing the niggles that were in vista.

Still dont think much of Vista, main problem with it is well
say i've got a greatl performing engine - with a sporty body it goes like stink
now lets put say a volvo body on it, Hmm bit slow eh? thats how i find vista
yes looks ok, stable enough but needs more horse power to get it moving
and that bugs me, it's bad enough we need newer hardware for the games half the time let alone having to do it for the os.

Anyway I hope they do get it right this time.
