Windows 7 Help

Hi all

I installed Win7 yesterday, from XP, obviously a clean install.

Now when I play games my ping fluctuates badly, from 40 to 300 and back, like something is trying to access the internet. I've isolated the pc, so theres no other pc or laptop in my house using the same internet but its still doing it.

I'm inclined to blame the new CS Source update, but its not that, as it does it when trying to play BC2 for example as well.

I had a message from windows about irc requiring an Agent or something, with a hotfix, but that doesnt seem to have made any difference.

Anyone have any ideas? This is REALLY annoying ....

What software are you running? Try disabling anything running in the background and try again.

Nothing running in the background that I can see, according to task manager

Are you running any AntiVirus or Firewall? Try turning them off and see if your Ping improves.

Ive got Microsoft Security Essentials, thats all. I'll try disabling them all and come back in a sec.

Ok, Sec Essentials removed, firewall turned off, it still does it.

Its not the connection itself, Ive tried on another pc running XP, it works fine.

It's like something is downloading all the time, but no sign of it when I'm not in-game. Very frustrating, and making me wish I hadnt bothered buying Win7

Ive just tried playing Quake3 live (not a Steam game of course) and it works fine. Looks like the problem could be Steam after all ....
