Windows 7 hits RC stage Build 7100

This may be useful to some who want to test drive Windows7.
Apologies if it has already been posted in this long thread.

With Windows 7, you now have the option to boot the OS from a VHD, a virtual disk file, instead of a partition. This way, you don't have to reconfigure your hard drive partitions.

Limitations: Hibernate is not supported.

Here are the simplified instructions:
1) Start Windows 7 installation from DVD.
2) Press Shift+F10 to start the command prompt.
3) Start diskpart.
4) Use the "create vdisk file=D:\Win7.vhd maximum=xxxxx" to create a virtual hard disk. Choose your drive and filename accordingly. xxxxx is in MB.
5) Type "select vdisk file=D:\Win7.vhd".
6) Type "attach vdisk". You will get a confirmation that it was attached.
7) Type "exit" to exit diskpart. And then close the command prompt.
8) Click on "Install Now" and install as you would normally by clicking on "Custom Install". Choose your attached vdisk as the location.

The installation takes care of adding the boot option to bcd. You don't have to do anything.

Has anyone who was running the origonal beta checked the Windows old file that a fresh install of 7100 creates.
I checked and it looked as if it had virtually backed up the whole of the previous install, it was 40GB's, which I deleted.

It is supposed to back up the whole install.

Yes it is free from Microsoft as it is BETA version of Win 7, just google win 7 and it will find you official microsoft site for it.

I already have both the 32bit and 64 bit versions of the 7100 release.

It just seems that with other OS's there were only certain Beta testers but obviously others unofficially got their hands on it.
With this it looks like the whole world has officially become Beta testers.

Has anyone else had a problem with the iso? I downloaded it and tried to burn it last night from a friend's PC as I have to be careful with my bandwidth. It burned fine but failed on verify.

When I tried to install it on my laptop it failed more or less straight away!

Guess I'll have to download it again and try again. Gutted really want to try it.:(
How is everyone finding it??

i seem to be all up and running smooth now. had a problem in games that it picked it up as being there being a phone call present and reduced ingame volume by 80% but found the setting and everything seems fine :)

Has anyone got problems with videos?

My AVI x264 (non HD) files are stuttering along..
Also, from time to time my graphics card crashes (ATi HD2900) and resets during video playback. I have tried the 2 drivers listed from ATi for Windows 7 x64. :(

EDIT: I have tried with and without the latest version of FFDSHOW which makes no difference.

Don't redownload unless you have verfied that the iso file is faulty. Check the MD5 hash (there are instructions somewhere in this thread) and if those are OK, change the media you are trying to write to for some better quality stuff.

Just installed 7100 and it picked up my wireless dongle without me having to point it towards a driver so chuffed with that, seems a bit faster then 7058, and wow it uses so little ram, Vista 64 was using almost 50% this uses about 29%

Indeed. Vista 64 on my primary computer (which has 4gb ram) uses 52% at start up and easily goes to 75% in use. My laptop which has 3gb uses 41% at start up and I don't often see it go past 60% in use.

I'm increasingly tempted to install it on my primary computer as it looks great with a lot more customization, runs great and the new taskbar is great as well (no matter how stupid that sounds :p).

XP Pro, for me, is far more responsive/immediate than windows 7 on my rig. I find that Windows 7 has a deffinite delay when trying to execute things.

It's not a big issue but it's one that would stop me from fully commiting myself to it as my main OS. The problem is, probably, more my lack of ability to get the best out if it and, with that in mind, are there any decent tutorial sites popping up for fine tuning windows7?

Edit: Additional: i've noticed that when browsing, web pages seem to build themselves up in stages in a very jarring manner is anyone else experiencing this?
