Would the license key from windows 7 home premium on a old laptop work on a new pc, would I be able to update it to windows 11.

The activation servers were closed down a little over a year ago for Windows 7 & 8.

Edit (hit reply prematurely): that means you can't migrate keys from 7 or 8 to 10/11

My understanding is that an unactivated copy of windows 11 just adds a watermark and won't let you change a few things like the desktop background so might be worth a play with it on a spare drive if you have one & see if its good enough?

I’m at the stage where I have windows 11 pro on a usb. No os has been installed on my new pc build. So I plug usb in pc, turn pc on and when asked for license key just try my Vista or windows 7 key and see what happens?

During the install it will ask for a license key and just put in the Windows 7 one.

If this does not work there is an option to "I do not have a license" which will then continue installing Windows and you can activate it once you have a key

Think you can only upgrade from Windows 10 now.

You can try your 7 key of course, it will either work or not.

Vista and Win 7 both failed to work but all good now. Both pc’s are wrapped up now for tomorrow. Just ran out time so busy day tomorrow. Two pc desk and chairs to build, one vanity and chair to build. Two pc to finish setting up as well travelling around seeing the family.
