i know it has been a while since i installed windows 7 on a hard drive, but still - 1 hour and still at 0%?!

it is a brand new i3 2100 with 8gb ram, could it be the old hard drive? it is a maxtor diamondmax 250gb that my friend asked me to use to save cost

EDIT: the drive had a fully functional version of windows 7 that i quickly booted up just before putting in the install disc (to do a clean fresh install) and all seemed fine

EDIT 2: i know it is still all doing its thing because the hdd activity light is blinking, but this is JUST WIERD!!!

EDIT 3: ironically this is my 2500th post :( :p :(

Last time that happened to me I had to update the firmware on my dvd drive, then it all worked fine. Still don't understand exactly why that helped, but it did

I'd had a couple take forever for no reason. Leave it a bit longer and hope for the best :p

yeah, ive plugged the monitor back into my machine and im just going to leave it till i go to bed :p

i just hope the little i3 cooler holds out - i dont know what temps are :(

Don't install it from the desktop. Install it properly. Set the first boot device to the DVD drive and go from there. Delete all partitions, then create a new one and format.

i always boot into the drive to install windows

yes, just like i normally do

Delete all partitions, then create a new one and format.

i have done

the thing just bluescreens on install - ive never seen this before!

im burning a new disc and if that doesnt fix it, try to install from usb

If you burn a custom image of Windows 7 make sure you do it on the lowest speed possible, think I tried burning at x8 before and the disc wouldn't work correctly. Takes a little while longer, but will rule out any further problems. :)

ive tried it again with the freshly burned disc and i got MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSOD, so i reckon it is the RAM

i would run memtest or try install windows on the same hdd but in a different computer see if you get any faults or the same problem when you installing

yeah, i think ill try that later

can you put the iso on a usb pen, see if its the drive/disk?
installs in 10 mins then

i can try it, but i doubt that is the problem, if it was the disc/dvd drive then it would install but then when i went to boot to the hdd, it would be corrupt no?

i always burn important things like this at 4x on good quality dvd's :)

UPDATE: ive just phoned overclockers and they said that i need to try each of the sticks separately to see which of the sticks is faulty because i cant return both or i will be charged (which i think is a bit silly seeing as i bought them as a pair - why should i have to do the diagnostics?) anyway, im going to try that and report back later :)

If you bought them as a matched pair then then they should both go back and you should get a new matched kit.

If you bought individual sticks then what OcUK said is correct.

Things must have changed then.

They always insisted you send back both sticks of a matched pair even if only 1 stick was faulty.

If you keep one stick, and they replace one stick, you no longer have a matched pair.

And what if the RAM you're returning is no longer available? Do you keep one stick and they replace the faulty one with something different?

I'd post here and hopefully you'll get a more sensible answer.
