Last night I tried to install Windows 7 (and XP) Both the cds I have didnt work, Windows 7 got to the screen where it starts to install and the cd stopped spinning and it froze. Windows XP copied all the files, restarted and started installing but stopped at 39 minutes remainding. I tried again a couple of times and both got to different stages of the install then stopped. I tried my mates cd drive but its the same as mine (LG) and did the same thing.

I have an image of Windows 7 64bit (3gb), is it possible to stick this on a 4gb memory stick and install off the stick? I am getting a mate to do me a copy of Windows 7 64bit to try another cd but i have my doubts.

Likely to be a ram / hard drive issue if you're having problems like that (if your mates drive / other media didn't work)

There are loads of install Windows 7 / Vista from USB guides, just google them, or search here

This is also a good little tool for creating a bootable USB drive :-

Novicorp Win to Flash

Run it, point it at a folder with your chosen Windows install files in it and let it do its stuff. Quick and painless. I've used it loads of times with Vista and Seven and it works perfectly.

It's freeware too.

may aswell just use microsofts own tool for it though

It's another option, that's all. :D

Not used the MS tool myself but I imagine it works in a similar fashion. The Novicorp one was about three or four mouse clicks and it was done.

Interesting, im using a velociraptor 150gb that has been faultless and passes all tests i have thrown at it. However i changed motherboard, ram and processor recently. I was thinking it could have been ram so had a look for a memtest program but couldnt find one from the bios. Ill look for making a boot cd for memtest86 (think thats what it used to be called) before trying the microsoft iso tool

I thought the Microsoft tool could be used to create a bootable USB from any ISO? I just downloaded it, and tried 4 different ISOs and all of them get the error "The selected file is not a valid ISO" when I click the "next" button.

Double clicking on the ISO itself quite happily brings up the Win 7 Disk Image burner and I can burn it to disk fine.

It's for Windows 7 ISOs only

The MS ISO tool if fantastic, but you must have a legitimate Windows 7 ISO to use it. Used it on numberous computers over the last couple of weeks. Only took 15 minutes to install from the USB stick to my netbook yesterday.

One handy tip is that if you have one official ISO but you want to install another (e.g. you have Professional but you want to install Ultimate) there is a tool you can use to change the ISO and make a new one that the tool will recognise as official. This is because every version is on the same disk, but there's a file that can be ammended with instructions as to which version that particular ISO is supposed to be. Check it out
