windows 7 installing sata hard drive problems

laptop wont load because girlfriend didnt look after it. had warnings saying C drive too full for ages and now wont load.

trying to put HDD in to my PC to copy files before formatting, but it wont install correctly.

its connected to the same sata and power cables that i normally use for my main PC storage, so i know the cables and connections are fine.

windows recognises there is a new device and installs, however it doesnt show under my computer as a drive.

windows disk management knows there is a device there, and shows its 3 partitions (recovery section, and C and D drive from laptop) and knows the size. however 2 of the information fields are blank, which are the Volume (should have F drive for example) and the file system (should show NTFS, i think)

all other drives and storage on the computer show all the information.

all online help suggests using disk management and assigning a drive letter (eg, F drive) however the option is greyed out.

the drive shows in the list without a drive letter and when you right click has no options (such as properties, which would be nice)

checked BIOS and the drive is showing there also.

any ideas on how to fix this?

thanks

PC is running windows 7 (64bt)

HDD in question has windows vista installed but obv not booting from this one, just trying to access the files
