Hey all,

Since the release of the Windows 7 beta etc. I've been considering giving it ago - but never got round to it in the end :( I've sort of kept my head out of any news to do with Windows 7.

Therefore - Is there anyone that would care to explain what advantages there are of going for Windows 7 (From Vista)?

Is it faster? Better for gaming? Easier to use?

Are there many compatability issues?

Thanks,

Marky

Is it faster? A little, on some tasks.

Better for gaming? I would say yes, not loads but a few fps better here and there.

Easier to use? IMO definitely

Are there many compatability issues? None whatsoever for me

I have vista 64 ultimate license but have been using the windows 7 rc as my main OS for ages now and don't want to go back.

Can anyone else comment on the compatability issues?
This was the worst thing I found when upgrading last time - things have smoothed over now that Vista has been around for a while - but is it going to be the same with Windows 7?

On the whole, everything just works. That said, there can be silly situations like the one I'm having with our HP LaserJet 1010. For some reason 7 will just not install it properly and HP won't even remotely provide support until Windows 7 is released. There are bodges to get it working, but what I'm trying to get across is there may be very minor compatibilty issues until the OS is on general release.

It's pretty much the same as Vista.

I personally really dislike the Windows 7 start bar compared to Vista and classic Windows, if anything it slows productivity down. I'm not really sure why they felt they needed to change it aside from to differentiate it more from Vista.

I haven't heard too many people say that, and it can be made to act like the old Start bar so that argument is a bit of a non-starter.

For me everything works except my all in one lexmark. The vista lexmark software isn't compatible so I can only use the print function.

Same as OP. Finally got round to installing Windows 7 today to have a quick look and immediately ran into driver problems. I installed the Intel chipset driver no problem but then I tried to install JMicron RAID controller driver and when I did the NEC 4551 DVD/RW drive disappeared...

That's within 2 minutes of install and driver problems. Turned it off, just cba with all that and I refuse to believe all these people saying they're using Windows 7 without so much as a hitch... No one has ever used Windows problem free, especially a Beta!

Well I'm afraid I've got a newsflash for you, loads of people have, including a large number on this forum. Don't write off an OS after 2 minutes just because your particular configuration didn't run "out of the box".

i'm using it trouble free too.
picked up my epsom 8400 no worries, searched and installed the drivers without having to do anything.
it's the easiest os i've ever installed.

jobe

trouble free here once installed. Only issue at start on raided drives where it wouldnt install on a partition until i deleted all other partitions until only one was there.
All drivers for vista worked where no w7 drivers were available.

it took me awhile to get my x1950xt installed properly, i must admit. but as it's a product no longer supported by ati even on xp/vista, i was quite prepared to put in the effort. and i got there in the end. :p

I've been using Windows 7 as my main OS for several months now and I haven't had a single problem. Not a single problem, issue, difficulty, or any other negativity you can think of!

I'm sorry you've had problems and I understand you're ****ed off.

its based on vista, so you shouldnt run in to compatibility issues

most people seem to really like 7

and it def runs faster and doesnt feel so bloaty

Perfect, trouble free install here too. Only been using it for a couple of days but I really like Win7, def. feels much snappier than Vista and I honestly can't believe how easy OS and systems in general are to use these days. The people out there who have never had the old PCI conflicts, the lottery of adding hardware, boot disks for XMS/EMS memory to play TIE Fighter and having to sod around with the config.sys and autoexec.bat really don't know how good they have it nowadays. God, I sound old. :)

Sorry if I offended you mate.... but your post is a perfect example to prove my point tbh. Maybe a little bit of 'fanyboy-ism' or whatever it is people feel for Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, etc???

My system is pretty run of the mill, nothing unusual at all.

E8400
P5k Deluxe - using the massively popular P35 chipset, the source of my driver issue.

Not at all, I turned it off waaaay before it got the chance mate ;)

I've just heard all these stories of everyone using a Beta version Windows absolutely trouble free - Windows that the whole world apparently hates as it's so crap - I install it and hit a problem within 2 mins with my 2nd driver install.... hmmmm.
