Windows 7 Not genuine

Used that 'remove WAT' that someone mentioned on here yesterday for him and it seems fine now.

Is that all there is to it. Odd, but it seems to be working ok for him now.

Quick questions, MODS if not allowed, sorry and please delete.

A friend about 4 or so months back brought a PC from a local shop in town with OS/ Win 7 on it.

All good and he has been fine with it till this week and now has a message saying this is not genuine.

I have been round to his to see if I can help. No sticker on the PC, no manuals/cd etc came with PC purchase.

Shop now in my local town is now a florest! so they wont be able to help!

He has rang Microsoft and spoken to 2 people on the phone there who cant/wont help him.

Is he stuffed? he didnt know about product key stickers etc when he brought it, I have only known him about 2 months so.

Is his best and 'only' option to buy another version of win 7 and back up everything and reinstall the new OS?

Also the pc came with Office 2007. Which is activated and working fine. So touch wood that is ok. But again no sticker, manual, cd........

Any help would be great. I have told him to use it over the weekend and hopefully by monday I will have a answer for him but think he will have to buy a new WIN 7 OS.

Thanks guys.

Answer: buy a new genuine copy of Windows 7.

My MSDN copy of W7 stuck a message on the desktop last night telling me it wasn't genuine. It's been installed for well over 90 days and I'm sure I activated it when I installed it.

I was able to activate it again no problems over the internet. Weird.

Mine has done this the last 2 times a ruddy Windows update has downloaded. Its quite annoying really.

Genuine Advantage was for XP only IIRC.

Nope had to do this on a fairly new 2nd hand laptop i bought that had win 7 on it. Had a cracked version on it, used the genuine tool to get a new key from microsoft, plus they sent a brand new disk through the post

well, there are known cases of legit copies thrown up that warning, its true. but chances of actually having a genuine copy of 7 installed by a 2-bit pc company that's now a florist and being given no discs of any kind is pretty low in all honesty. and if thats not genuine, then you can be sure office 2007 isnt either.

that company probably shut down for a reason.....

there's never been a better time to go legit for those that arent already than right now.Office 2010 pro plus (can be installed on 2 pc's) is £40 to any school, college or uni member and their family members, windows 7 home premium is less than a hundred quid. Not as cheap as it was at launch, mind ( i picked up two full copies for that price, totally legit) but its still cheap. even if you only have it installed for 2 years, thats something stupid like 13p a day.
