My shiny new pc parts should arrive tomorrow and I'm in two minds as what to put on it...

I use both at the moment and have no real preference and my opinions probably wont change much when 8.1 comes out either (I've learned to live with the metro stuff). Is there any hardware support that's Windows 8 specific that I should consider? I'm thinking in the realms of DX11 and SSD trim support...

I've got an MSDN subscription so the cost isn't an issue.

Thoughts?

Better to get newer os in my opinion. The start button's coming back and there are Addons to get it back in the meantime. It's a bit zippier to startup. That was the main benefit for me. Uses a little less space too.

I have to admit, I must be the only person who doesn't really miss the start button - I don't actually use it. Win+R is faster for me anyway :)

Yeah, I'll probably take a look at it next month when it hits MSDN out of curiosity more than anything. It's been a LONG time since I last built a machine! If there's no real gain in terms of hardware support, I'll probably just go for 8 anyway.

Windows 7 for me until they bring back the start menu :) Having to use 3rd party software to get it back is not an ideal fix. Seems they have realised the error of their ways however..

Its a button to the start screen, the menu is nit coming back, basically people couldn't work out hot corners, so there will now be a visible button. But that's it

I do hope the button isn't there by default and can't be removed? I don't want the start button there, I love the new start screen and I love the fact the start button has gone even more as it gives me more room in my taskbar?

Please don't tell me they are forcing us to have a start button now right?

I really liked win7 and run it on my GFs work PC and will remote admin my mum's new one, which I'm just building for her, on win7.

I wouldn't put win7 on my own though. Win8 with start8 is the best winders. Boots quicker, is more responsive, stays up for longer without needing to be rebooted.

The Start Menu configuration has been around since Windows 95 and no matter what anyone says It will continue if they want their core business to come back. Believe it or not whilst you have been upgrading many have stuck around with Windows XP. That goes for many office work places and Even Government departments.
My daddy always said, "If it ain't broke why fix it?" which is so true. I know everyone seems to be getting on the tablet and phone bandwagon but if I wanted to take tablets I'd consult a Doctor, not a computer Software engineer. Opinions are one thing but if you are insulting your core userbase you have lost the battle. The fact that when you want to do something in Windows you have to go to certain lengths to achieve it means that you have to leave the nuts and bolts of the desktop open so things cvan be achieved. One thing that has got me a little puzzled is the login stage. It logs you straight onto the internet. Can you get into windows 8 without being connected to the internet? Because if you cannot, as an operating system is sucks. I have only tried out the preview version and I dumped it after two days. The only thing I did like was the fact that it recognised all my operating systems and automatically added them to a pleasant GUI Boot screen, after that windows 8 was downhill apart from one thing and that was the search function. Everything else I can do in Windows 7, slightly slower but adequately. Even then I don't like Windows 7 because of the poor support for E-Mail, no POP client and always having to access the programs from the Start menu. At least Windows XP/Vista came with a Legacy support. XP may be outdated when it comes to installing on an AHCI system and downright Awward to do workarounds but that is all part of the voyage of the PC. If all you want is a Glossy presentation screen with little to offer the nuts and bolts user then I believe that a good 60% of PC users will skip windows 8 because they cannot see any real benefit to offer them.

I have been using Windows 8.1 Preview for a few days now and I like the clean fresh look of the desktop and I have got it configured to my liking, I even like the start screen. What I don't like is the Metro Apps, I really don't get it. Take for example the calculator, there is the nice desktop calculator and then the Calculator App which on my monitor is 27" in size, who needs a 27" calculator?

I really think Microsoft have messed up big time here, they have tried to combine 2 completely different operating systems and it really doesn't work, all of the metro apps look and ugly and clunky. I have uninstalled as many apps as possible but some won't unistall like the camera app, store, skydrive etc. I will try Windows 8.1 for another week and then if I can't get used to it I will go back to Windows 7.

Use the calculator in split screen with a document on the other other side works well and no messing about resizing, like purely in desktop.

But you do releasing there's a massive amount of apps, on the App Store.
Things like netflix, audible, youtube, kindle etc are all far far better as apps than the website UI.

And no not all the metro apps are clunky and ugly.
And combining the two UI works extremely well.

Perhaps I just need to get used to it. I'll try the apps that you have suggested to see if they change my mind.

this takes 1 second to set up as opposed to 10+ seconds of awkward resizing, imagine word or something on right, I haven't reinstalled open office yet.

and go have a look in the app store, as said plenty that have a far better experience than the desktop equivalent.

You would probably "get" apps a lot more if you were running it on a tablet. I use a handful of metro apps on my desktop but it is minimal.
