Windows 7 or Windows 8?

I'm building a new PC and I'm not sure which OS to go with. I'm currently using Windows 7 and cant fault it, is it worth upgrading or should I stay with 7 and wait for the next one (generally I find that I get on with every other OS)?

I've not used Windows 8, I've seen the tiles on it and its abit off putting & I have no intention of getting a touchscreen monitor (appears like its aiming towards that kind of use).

I've read reviews online but would rather hear from people's experiences of both...

i think 8 is like marmite. some people love it and some hate it. you'd be better off downloading the trial and trying it for yourself. it's too personal a thing to simply go on what other people think.

The tiles are not a problem, one click and you are on normal desktop.
I find 8 faster and easier than 7 and the longer i use it the better i like it but thats just a personal opinion :D

for me i'd stick with with 7 for now, as there's no real need to upgrade from 7 as yet, i'd wait until blue comes out, see the reviews and then wait for sp1 to come out, then myself might make the jump, but no real need to do it any quicker, as there's nothing special or anything really to gain sooner, it's not as if 7 doesn't work well and 8 is going to make that much differences, slightly quicker, better memory management, slightly better use of sdd's, later dx version and a few other gimmicks, and a front end made for touch screens.

nothing ground breaking

Thanks guys, I've just watched afew youtube clips of people using it & I can definitely see it being like marmite. Looks like some good features but not quite sure I'm ready to accept the change yet!

I'll get another copy of Windows 7 (Laptop will still be used by the missus), thanks for the views!

I love 8, after using 7 for years.

It takes getting used to. I'd say trial it for 2 weeks, and really give it a go. I doubt you'd want to go back after that once you'd had time to appreciate what it offers.

I think most people don't give it long enough and are put off by the initial shock of the start screen, which is understandable. It's worth it though. It's where the OS is going so you may as well get on board now.

Cost me a fortune upgrading 3 laptops & 5 pc's from XP to W7 64, just couldn't justify spending that amount again on W8, which to me doesn't offer anything of benefit to me over W7.

XP last me eight or nine years before I upgraded to W7 & I expect W7 to last just as long, unless a new O/S come along which has advantages over W7.

Was only £25 to upgrade until recently ;)

I think getting over the basic changes would take abit of getting used to. I remember saying I'd never get an iphone because of the setup. 2 years later I had an iphone and cant imagine changing to anything else. Maybe a trial would be the way to go...

It was £14.99 at one time (if you had a qualifying PC), not sure how that helps though...? It cost me just under £60 to change four PC's.

At least you can buy the pro version for just less than £50 now. Still with five PC's and three laptops it would cost quite a bit more than I would consider to be worth it over W7.

Do it! I strongly recommend looking up the keyboard shortcuts so you don't have to fiddle with the charms bar with your mouse (windows key + I is your power shortcut). Give it a real go and see how you feel about it. You can use it just like w7 if you want: windows key to open start, windows key to close it. Pin control panel to the start page etc.

You may find that little things like the advanced task manager will become essential tools that leave a hole in your soul when you have to use W7. Nifty live tile apps will become your friend as you boot your pc in the morning and eye up the weather. Once you sex up your start page you'll wonder why you got by with just a little utility bar all these years.

Come to the dark side.

get a little program like start 8 and you don't ever have to use the tile screen again, that's what I did

I upgraded to WIn8 and don't regret it. Very rarely use any metro apps but the find myself now just opening start, typing the first few letters of the program I want and hitting return. Seems pretty natural now.
