Windows 7 or XP

There is a "special" emoticon for people like you. Why is the truth signature worthy, I don't understand?

I can only assume you have not bothered to check it yourself.
I have run all 3 OS' at some point, and Vista was by far and away the slowest. To say that Vista is faster than W7 is ridiculous!

I wonder who's going to be running Vista in a year from now... :p

Well done for taking it out of context. I said gaming is faster. Booting is faster in w7 as is shutdown and application starting is about the same.

Thursday or friday last week. I did not say a lot better, just a bit better. It may be due to drivers or unoptimised OS but I doubt it. I am more than happy to lose the odd fps and use Windows 7 though.

I was presuming you were finding the performance difference between Windows XP and Windows Vista compared to Windows 7 pretty substantial because you were recommending Windows XP. If the difference is only the odd frames per second though, which you will only be able to see if you're running a program or using a built-in tool in a game that keeps track of the fps and not when you're just simply playing a game, there's no reason to recommend Windows XP. :)

If I install Windows 7 64 bit will it run ok until I get the extra RAM

Windows 7 x64 will run absolutely fine on 2GB of RAM.

Why don't you put both operating systems on the PC?

Don't know if it is still true but last I heard was XP-Directx9, Vista-DirectX10, Win7-Directx11. This is a gaming decision.

I was using XP 32b until recently with dual core and 2-3 GB RAM (1gb died) :D Then I upgraded to Win7 64b RTM, which I have preordered.

Essentially things used to take their time on XP, on Win7 everything has significantly increased. Loading times on steam, load times on games, slightly better FPS in the games I tried. All running from the same drive as I have games partitioned onto another drive on the same volume.

I've found sound to be my biggest gripe in Win7 so far, but I have a pap onboard sound and should fork out £30-50 quid for a decent soundcard and I would have no reason to complain.

i find it strange that anyone formatting or buying a new pc would consider placing windows xp (as great as it is) on in a machine that is happy running windows7, its proved to be stable and like it or not its the future.

with your spec i would cram some more ram in and get windows7 on

This is pretty much exactly my opinion. XP is a great OS, but Windows 7 outperforms it in most things (and I find runs much faster than vista on older hardware and slightly faster on newer hardware) and if you are buying a new PC, you may as well go with Win7.

the only game I've come across that suffers under Vista/7 is Company of Heroes

Never run it under XP, as it runs on my rigs fine in Vista and 7.

But have you checked that the difference isn't because you're running in DX10 under Vista and 7 - which isn't available in XP? That has a massive performance hit.

If you have the settings to "Ultra" from patch 2500+ then that is in DX10.

_Jimiad_,

Ouch again jessica these botted responses are surely spam responses.
Pleases we will order w7 i am sure but this is blatant spamming!!!!
I myself am very sorry to spam this thread with this but come on every time w7 is mentioned i see a bot response!
By the way w7 on my system is better in all departments then xp and vista the boot up times make a mockery of older OS.

I find Win7 only faster on really old systems compared to Vista,I had the chance to try a few Linux distros and boy was impressed with very fast speed of installation(drivers for everything) and very minimum hardware requirements, infact if I did not game I would not be touching Windows.

Right now I'm torn between Vista x64 (which has been great for me over last 2 years) and Win7(should I wait for Win8 I ask myself).

XP or Win7 is easy decision,go Win7.

i know exactly what you're saying, but benchmarks come to the same conclusion that I have.

CoH runs better in XP (on all settings)

I use W7
