Hi guys.

My Toshiba laptop is really starting to wind me up.

After the card reader's inability to read cards now Windows has decided for no reason to take the michael.

Whatever I do, Windows just won't boot. No safe mode, no recovery, no normal start up. I can't even get into my BIOS to boot from disc.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Cheers

Ok, when it says starting Windows there's no pretty bubbles or whatever, it just stays on that screen. Same for Windows is loading files, there's no hard drive activity either.

if you cant get into the bios you are either pressing the wrong button to do so, or the motherboard is buggered

I disabled the flash screen so that the machine would boot faster, but no matter what buttons I press the BIOS just doesn't appear.

If you can't even get to the BIOS, then that isn't Windows's fault. That's more likely to be a hardware fault, probably dodgy RAM or similar.

So it gets as far as the black screen with 'Starting Windows' but the flag doesn't appear?

Have you tried pressing F8 repeatedly before that screen appears to get the boot options menu up for safe mode etc?

Yeah, that loads. But after pressing ANY option such as safe mode, or repair, or last known etc etc it just hangs and the activity light stops flashing.

Right, so something is going wrong when it boots. When you try safe mode, what is the last file at the bottom of the screen called when it freezes? Could be a bad driver screwing things up.

Are you able to plug the hard drive into another machine as a secondary drive to back-up (if required) and test the drive?

I don't have a caddy and I wouldn't want to as the laptop is still within warranty. I can't really afford to be without it either, I feel like throwing it out of the window mind you!

Is a re-format an option here? If you have a restore disc then boot off that (most laptops have an option to press F12 or something to change the boot device).

The windows disc I have isn't the recovery disc, but I assume I can use it to repair the installation. As far as getting the boot order up is concerned, nothing I try brings it up.

The only things that appear are the OS choosing option and start windows normally/launch startup repair.

Also, there must be a way to get the BIOS back up. But I've tried every *** key, Del, Esc etc etc but is there perhaps another key or combo I could try?

This list may be of use.

EDIT

This may get you to a recovery partition.

See if it has a recovery partition…

1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine.

Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.

2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.

3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.

4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.

5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.

6) Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.

7) Click Next to Start recovery.

***This will erase all your unsaved data!***

First, reset the BIOS to undo what ever quick boot change it is you made. The missus Samsung laptop has a bios reset located under the memory modules. Its two contact plates rather than a jumper, but you can still short them with a screw driver/paper clip/tin foil.

similar issues on an acer laptop turned out to be a memory issue, swapped dimms in and out, isolated 1 faulty dimm

laptop gave no clues as to this fault, no bios no beeps etc

in my experience, the media buttons on toshiba laptops usually take you through to the BIOS if you press them after the power button.

Also, no laptop's warranty is voided by removing the HDD unless it's made by apple.
