Cleartype is crap. It simply does not work. I had this issue with both Vista and 7. Everything was horrible looking. This is how you disable it in Windows 7.
1) Type Cleartype into the Start menu and press enter.
2) A window appears. Untick the Turn On Cleartpye and click next a few times until you reach the end of the settings. Close program.
3) Again in the Start menu type: systempropertiesperformance.exe and hit enter. Now make sure "smooth edges of screen font" is off.
4) Reboot your system and cleartype is totally disabled.
On a side note. If you use IE9 for your browser software Cleartype is automatically turned back on and there is no way of turning it off. I found this out after installing it. I uninstalled it and the blurry looking text was back yet Cleartype was disabled. I spent hours trying to figure it out but gave up and ran True Image and restored my original image.
