Just a quicky, if I install a copy of Windows 7 RC OVER the copy of Vista I already have on this machine, is it possible to get rid of Vista, yet keep all my files and programs with a nice new shiny OS?

Cheers.

i think you can do an upgrade maybe. not sure on that.

safest bet is to make backups and reinstall the apps. you'll get a nice clean OS that way too. don't want to clog it up with old stuff before you've even started.

Yeah I remember when I upgraded from win 98 to win XP. Just insert win7 cd and click the option to keep the files and youre good to go. It will automatically tell if you want to keep the files and docs. At least that what win XP did for me.............

I would not advising upgrading from Vista to 7 RC, wait for the full version otherwise you will need to do a full reinstall from RC to 7 as upgrade is deffo not supported, that's presuming it allows you to upgrade from Vista to 7 RC which I didn't think it did...

I agree with the above except I would never do an OS upgrade from any version to another. Backup your files and do a fresh install.

I do that everytime I go to a new OS (for example Vista -> Windows 7, OS X 10.5 to OS X 10.6) as it keeps everything fresh.

Shinestar184,

It is more advisable to perform a clean install as you will have to reinstall your software either way (upgrade or clean install.) You will also receive a better experience from doing so.

To learn more about how Windows 7 will best serve you, Microsoft does have a site with whitepapers, tutorials, walkthroughs and screen casts on all the “under the hood” features in Win 7. Check out the Springboard site for Windows 7 on TechNet

I was under the impression that the Vista/W7 upgrade process was more streamlined then previous upgrade processes, is this not the case?

I couldn't be bothered with a clean install on my home PC and did an upgrade from Vista x64 to W7 x64, haven't noticed any problems to date.
