hey guys my mate is having problems with windows 7 and im trying to get him some help and you guys will probably have a fair idea.

basically his bios is set for 400x7 on a E6300 which ends up as 2.8

in windows 7 and cpu-z it shows his bus as 266x7 which is the default 1.8

ive told him to check his bios over and over for the usual speedstep eist and stuff which he is adamant is all turned off.

im stumped tbh as i walked him through his first overclock on windows xp and everything worked and reported fine until windows 7 was put on a few days ago.

I've had this same problem with my motherboard sometimes pretty much means windows has messed around with ur overclock. Not really sure how it happens and how to fix it properly. What it is usually is because the overclock has failed maybe not enough juice etc and ur mb has reset itself (but it will still display the overclock in the bios). Pretty much what u need to do is reset the cmos and try again. Then u can tell if that is the case next time when u restart ur machine after an overclock it should restart twice if that is the problem.

Also the fsb seems a little high for my liking especially if thats sill linked to the memory. Also ur gonna need more voltage to get some more overclock out of that. Remenber also that some chips don't like u just jumping up (not saying thats fact, but most amd overclocks i have done u always seemed to get a better overclock if u work ur way up slowly, instead of jumping straight in.). Seriously thought if he wants to get a decent overclock he's gonna have to learn a bit more or u do it for him.

get him to open cpu-z and run something like orthos.

my feeling is he still has speedstep on and when he starts orthos it will bump up.

jobe

CPU-Z says I'm running at 1.4Ghz at the moment but thats down to speedstep and dynamic clocking. It's all set up to turn on the overclock when needed.

Do as Jobe said, run something to make the processor work a bit and if the speed rises to the correct number then no worries. Besides why turn speedstep off anyway.

pretty much u can put speed step back on once u have stressed tested the overclock otherwise it will be a nightmare to test.

ok a few updates lads

running orthos did not change the bus speed under cpu-z so it cant be speedstep or anything.

i have asked him to try changing ram timings and cpu-z updates that fine but still refuses to update the FSB changes

im gonna get him to try to reset the bios, windows 7 was installed when he had his overclock settingson by the way if that would make a difference, i normaly reset them to default before a format.

all help is appreciated lads :)

CPuz not showing the correct speed is odd.

But don;t rely on what windows says, I used to have a q6600 at 3.53ghz and it never reported it over 3333, likewise with my I7 it gets confused and never reports the correct speed.

Be interested to hear any results you get for this one - I'm having the exact same thing since upgrading to Windows 7. Havent had much time to look into at present, but tis a strange one.

ok he said it was fixed by first resetting the bios to optimized defaults then removing both the battery and power cord for around 10-15 mins.

after that he boted back into the bios and set his proper overclocked settings and both win 7 and cpu-z are reporting correct cpu speeds.

i dont know if it makes a difference but i never ever install with overclocked settings.better to load optimized defaults when you install fresh windows copies
