Windows 7 RTM - What do you think of it?

They went slightly backwards with it. Too many different editions/versions. UAC nonsense. Much higher system requirements. Slower OS in most instances than XP.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a terrible OS but I would I have recommended it to anyone else as an upgrade to Windows XP? Afraid not.

I'm loving it at the min.

Coming from XP on 2 machines, a new netbook and my old desktop with a P4 3gig, 1 gig of RAM etc, and it's running excellently on both (the desktop surprised me a bit).

Everything works, and so far everything seems quicker, as well as looking a little nicer and more modern :)

Too many different editions/versions.

There are exactly the same amount of editions with Windows Vista than there are with Windows 7. I can't really see why this is much of a problem anyway.

UAC nonsense.

User Account Control is a fantastic and a well needed feature. It's only those that have a misunderstanding of UAC and how it actually works that seem to think it's useless.

I can't say I have noticed much difference in performance between Windows XP and Windows Vista on the machines I have used.

I wouldn't say that it is useless because it is not, but I find it incredibly annoying and tiresome to have a lot of checkboxes to go through just to change a simple setting or install a program. I have not had much experience with 7 as I turned it off pretty much straightaway, but have heard that it is far less 'in your face' so to speak.

Ah it appears it's something to do with the audio driver for my Asus Xonar DX (beta drivers only thing available for win7), if i close HsMgr.exe they both open fine,

/comparethemarket mode on
interestings!
/comparethemarket mode off

EDIT: that's lucky, theres a small patch on the Asus forums which they didn't include on the beta driver page, ah well all fixed there :)

was about to say that

Asus have the worst customer support pages, they have spelling mistakes all over the site

I think that was an issue with Cmedia's drivers within the Asus ones, I've got an Auzentech card and I get the same issues if I install the drivers for it on my PC, except they seem to be a lot worse to the point where I can't install or uninstall anything, I had to re-install windows to get around it.

What is it with sound cards? no one seems to be able to make a soundcard with drivers that just work, i want a new soundcard to replce my constantly problematic Xonar DX but there just isn't any thing better

All i want is a soundcard that just works, with drivers that i can install and just "work" >_<

What's weird is that every other build of win 7 I've tried have worked with the drivers available on Auzentech's website.

Must be me but don't find UAC intrusive or annoying at all, seems like a reltively good feature tbh.

Everything is better and faster on Win7 than on XP/Vista.

Everything.

Well, maybe not everything if you are the type that thinks a PC from the stone age "should still cope today".

Windows complete pc backup on w7 is now allow to let you backup all of your data, drivers, applications, operating system onto dvd disk or your usb storage backup to restore it back on other new hard disk or new extra large space on the hard disk (the past on vista, microsoft wouldn't allow it to restore on different hard disk)

A big difference.

P.S.

Windows backup only work on Professional or Ultimate only.

I like it :)

Installed Ultimate x64 when it became available on Technet (6th August), everything works flawlessly out of the box, quick installation and smooth operation.

I was expecting more of a UI over-hall if im honest, most of it is still Vista underneath, or thats how it feels, just a few tweaks and additional options.

Its now installed on my main system which has fairly new hardware at a good spec, and its also installed on an old IBM T40 which it also runs fine with no issues, so it seems more versatile than Vista was, Windows 7 is less resource hungry.

I shall be sticking with Windows 7.

How large is the RTM x64 iso with no extra language packs?

edit: nvm gonna use the official hash to check
