Windows 7 is really doing my head in today. Admit I only had an hours sleep last night also so that may not be helping.
Done a reinstall today (new 160gb SSD)and when I try to access directories on my data drive it complains about access being denied. I can resolve the issue each time it appears but when I try to resolve it at the drive level (so the changes will be replicated through the entire drive structure), when it attemps to apply the settings it compains about access being denied to various folders, even though I am logged on with my user ID which is an Administrator. So it seems I have to do it on a directory by directory basis which is just daft. If I apply the same changes to a dir it's fine, but then some lower level directories might still need the security changing if I access those.

ANy ideas how I can apply this change at the drive level successfully?

Thats just UAC - if you go to control panel and user accounts then you'll see an option to change User Account Control. Change this to a lower level and see if that fixes the issues.

Thanks, it worked in the end. Finally for some reason it applied the new security settings to the whole drive without warning about access being denied.
Not quite sure what I did differently when it worked, or whether Win7 just decided to start playing ball. It was annoying as I appeared to have FULL CONTROL yet couldn't access the files in a folder until I added the user Administrator

You can take control - which allows you to change settings, but you still need to add yourself to the list of allowed users.
