Windows 7 slower than XP ?

I installed the full retail version yesterday but got to say i feel like games load slower. Is this me or is W7 slower? If it is will it Microsoft make it quicker as it updates over time?
 
do you have AV installed? defender real-time running alongside it?

what hard drive are you using
 
Yes , you are correct win 7 is slower at games than xp

There are a lot more process's running in the background under win 7 than
xp
This extra overhead is probably what is eating into the performance
 
Windows 7 is self tuning, once it's been running a while and superfetch and such has learned your habits a bit more it should be notably quicker when loading your favourite programs/games.
 
Why do people assume a newer OS will be faster than an old os?
It should be slower, it's built with newer hardware in mind. XP was built with 9 year old technology in mind.

It will probably get a little quicker with the Service Packs and run better but that's about it
 
Even on my relatively crappy desktop [athlon64 3200, 1GB RAM], windows 7 has impressed me with it's responsiveness. Easily on a par with XP, and much better than Vista. That said, I haven't tried many games to compare loading times.

Indeed - I bet Win95 would fly on my machine, but there's a reason I have Windows 7 installed :p

MS have said that one of the aims for W7 was for better performance on old hardware, so it should perform better than Vista like-for-like.
 
7 cannot be compared to XP, it can only be compared to Vista where it more or less faster for day to day use.

If you've put Windows 7 on aging hardware then it'll certainly be slower than XP. Since XP windows indexes your hard drives/vital files which makes loading key/common programs quicker but it can take a while to do this, especially when you're constantly changing the system to you needs and installing all your programs. Give it a week before judging the speed.
 
I wonder if folks have forgotten how much slower games were in windows 95 compared to dos. hardware advancements eventually cover the shortfalls but in the short term with such a complex piece of software as an operating system, you cant expect there not to be any differences.

What worries me is it's things like this that will lead to 7 ending up with the same rep as Vista.
 
I did not bother using the betas or rc's and got my retail win 7 home premium and installed it yesterday, took about 15 minutes to install and when it got to desktop the only drivers it did not have installed was my auzentech prelude x-fi.

Tweaked some things for better ssd performance like disabling defrag, index, superfetch, page file, system restore, made shortcuts clean without the "shortcut to" and arrow thing and enabled the old quick launch tool bar and got my most used apps on the tool bar, got eset on, activated win 7, put steam and left 4 dead on, it said there was known issues with norton ghost 14 but I installed anyway and made an image in 4 min and have 98.6gb left over from 119gb on my raid0 2 x ocz summit ssd's :).

So far it is only media which is bothering me, I installed cccp codec package so all media types will play fine, but media player classic home theatre (my favourite media player) has a 3 second delay before it plays media, other than the delay it plays great, normal media player classic plays instantly but videos are pixelated and windows media player plays instantly but has visuals just like mpchc but I only use windows media player for music.

For those that don't know about cccp it is a great and clean all in 1 media codec package, been using it for a few years.

Whilst writing this I found a fix, a 64bit version of mpchc it plays everything as it should now :), in the options, formats just click all the wanted file type associations and its set good :).

I had vista 64 tweaked to perfection far better than xp since sp1 and I believe it was in its prime since sp2 with tweaks, I had it performing just as good as win 7, if I'd have known dx11 was coming to vista I'm not sure I would have pre ordered win 7, but I did and I'm getting on fine with it now :), all the beta and rc testers helped to make it good from day 1 of release so that in itself is great :).
 
waynio did you check to see if Win7 would play your media before installing that codec? reason I ask is it can play some of my rather obscure digital camera movie files without any problems - something XP and Vista would have a fit over. They're .MTS files by the way.

MS are quoting that win 7 is less bloaty and therefore would run faster on older hardware too, (which i have found to be my experience, runs nicer than xp on my laptop and netbook)

also, i dont think win 7 will end up with a rep anywhere near Vista.. many many peoples slated vista from day one (myself included) but so far, win 7 has been called "what vista should have been" and i agree , and i and many others think its great.

No.

Some games are faster in 7, some games are faster in XP.
