windows 7 strange problem

Hi
Today I logged on to my pc on the only available account to be greeted by a default desktop background, and around 50% of desktop icons and loads of files and folders in my documents missing. I checked on local disk information and the amount of space used was exactly the same as usual. Rather worryingly when I open the start menu a new item was there, remote desktop connection along with a magnifying tool. The PC is on a protected network, it has a dynamic IP and is turned off when I am not using it which makes me think surely nobody could steal information from it. AVG antivirus is always updating, flash and java too. I've not disclosed any login details anywhere ever.
If it is not a problem with someone accessing the PC remotely could it be a hardware problem such as a failing hard drive, or even a cmos battery?
I've had the pc for 2 and a half years now with a 1tb mechanical hard drive, gaming for about 1 hour every day.
The rest of the system is a gigabyte X79 mobo with an I7 3820, 8gb of 1600mhz ram, nvidia gtx770 gpu with updated drivers.
Today I've done a system restore from a point 2 days ago, and everything has returned which is all very well but why would it go missing in the first place:confused:
any help is much appreciated

Remove Java, that's just a security mess.

Download Malwarebytes, boot into Windows safe mode and do a scan to see if it can find anything.
