One of our users here is running Windows 7, but is out of the office more than not. Because of this we moved his my documents to a network share and set up offline files so he can work while he roams.

Problem is, we have a bunch of crappy old applications that insist on my docs being on a local drive so what we were thinking of doing was syncing the other way, so that my docs is local and when he's connected to the domain it syncs back to his network share.

How can I set this out without forking out for any third party tools?

Just some sync software will do? I cant think of any freebies, but we have a similar situation to you with our users laptops, we use a tool called SecondCopy and use the sync ... it syncs their local docs to the san docs and vice versa etc ...
