"i normally just turn my computer off and it installs the updates for me, dont remember turning that off."

post i made in another thread;

i noticed about a month ago that my last windows update was in December 2014, so i clicked "search for updates" just searched and searched and searched. i think it came up with an error later on that night.

looked for fixes for this but they all where/are more than a 5-10min thing so never bothered.

is there a simple fix for this?

hmm. yes the problem is it takes hours to come up with the problem. i have had windows update checking since i made the thread lol and it was over a month ago the first time i noticed it.

tbh im not even sure it gives a "code". im thinking it just tells me it couldnt get update info

EDIT - its now 12(midnight) and its still checking...

What exactly will system restore change IF I have a option for the 14/12/14 lol. Don't want to loose anything or have to do hour long downloads again.

Never got any error codes last night... The missus made me turn the pc off when I went to bed :(

I use malware bytes and MSE more than once a week.

Date and time are correct. I actually done a sync the other day googling this problem. It didn't fix it.

Where do I find the event logs?

event log steps

start - control panel - administrative tools - event viewer

once here on the left click on windows logs and check under application and system to see if there is any warnings or errors

so far i have found lots of events for the windows update client. they are mostly information.

found one error so far - "installation failure: windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: definition update for MSE - KB2310138 (def 1.191.2948.0)"

after typing that i see its for my MSE... MSE is working fine and updates from within itself.

hmm, okay so all i can find is the above error.

there are other entries but all they say is unable to automatic update. with no information as to why. code number 16 is all i can take from it.

EDIT - so looking through the update history i have found that it still auto updates but only with the MSE definition updates.

the last update i had was - Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3024777)

Installation date: ‎12/‎12/‎2014 17:29

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

EDIT2 - from what i can tell it seems the update that has stopped me from getting any future updates is the update that was released to stop the god awful update that stopped everyone else getting updates lol.
