We are now offering customers the option of purchasing Windows Vista OEM with a Windows 7 upgrade voucher. The programme runs from June 26th 2009 to January 31st 2010 and will be delivered from October 22nd 2009 onwards. More information can be found at the Microsoft Upgrade Option website and full instructions on how to order will be included.

This is a bargain! All the indications are that Windows 7 is a sure winner, well worth the big saving and an upgrade path for those buying or building a new PC now.

I have to say I don't get this. The Windows 7 pre-order will be much cheaper than this. I suppose this is useful to people who are building a PC right this second and for some reason don't want to install the beta version, but for everyone else it's pointless.

The pre-order scheme is only going to be a 30-day limited offer that ends in August. After that there's a 2 month period where this way should be cheaper and is ideal if you're building a machine now.

Prices for separate upgrade will be at least £79.99

From the 15th July until 9th August you'll be able to get the full version of home premium for £49. From 22nd October to 31 December you'll be able to get the full version for £79. At those prices, nobody will be buying the upgrade (just getting it for free in an offer like this or with a new pc buy) during that time so the price of the upgrade disk itself is immaterial.

Slackworth - you're right if you're building a PC now and it's mission critical maybe the beta's not the way to go.
