Hi guys, having a bit of a problem activating windows 7. I have the upgrade version (previously having vista x64). I bought a new ssd and performed a clean install straight to the ssd. Now I have the problem that I can't activate it as it I in effect have no previous version of windows for it to recognise!

I didn't get a product key with the upgrade version (or I can't find it) so I assume I'm meant to use the vista product key as it is an upgrade?

I've read a few solutions on other sites, but none of them seem to be an easy fix (i.e. reinstall vista then upgrade to win7 - seems a bit of a long workaround)

It's best to buy the full version, retail or OEM, of 7. The upgrade version is a pain, as you know.

I'm only posting this as a warning for others.

thanks - that worked! I thought I had a product key but it wasn't on the certificate attached to the cd case - turns out that it was in the confirmation email when I ordered. Seems a bit silly not to stick it on the case like all other versions...

because I'm pretty sure at the time I bought it, it was much cheaper! (plus I think I got it on a student deal thing, so probably had restrictions as to what i could buy)

Obviously I didn't know about the problems back then...
