Since I have Windows 7, the same card reader sometimes works as USB2.0 without any problems and other times (even on the same USB port) it decides to work at USB 1 speeds and windows displays its usual 'This device could perform faster' message, which doesn't help in any way.

Any ideas?

It's an external one made by branded inov8

by get USB3 do you mean a USB3 card reader, a USB3 pci card or both?

I think that reply was tongue in cheek.

Could be an issue where you're using the front USB ports -quite often these have less power than the rear ones.

Try a rear power port..

Card readers tend to be very cheap things.. personally I prefer getting a dedicated one for the media. Ie a compact flash reader, and a seperate sony memory stick reader.. They are usually more robust
