Windows 7 - Worth upgrading from Vista64 from a performance point of view?

Im happy with my Vista install from a functional point of view. I dont think there is anything from a feature point of view that I want/need from Windows 7 (My laptop has Windows 7 installed on it so I can compare), but Im getting some suggestions that changing to Windows 7 will give me some improvements in performance of some games, and more importantly, some video encoding.

Can I expect some improvements from a performance point of view on my rig currently? I will be updating once some newer processors are released (my Q6600 just doesnt want to die!) so if I do, can I buy retail Win7 and move it over to the newer rig? Can I sell off my mobo/processor with the current retail Vista64 OEM (as it is tied with this setup)?

Cheers in advance.

Definitely you will notice big improvements and your system will feel a lot snappier, Windows 7 is what vista should have been.

Bah..... was afraid of hearing this. I bought Win7 pro retail at launch for less than £60, had it lying around for months and sold it as i felt i didnt need it.

Surely with all the updates over the years, it must be up to Win7 for performance?

Now i will be buying at full price!

If you're interested in encoding performance you might want to look for some hard numbers to back up what people are saying about Windows 7 being faster, because you might be disappointed.

Windows 7 is certainly more efficient with what you've got but I wouldn't expect massive gains in things that really boil down to the hardware, drivers and the quality of the encoder itself.

I'm not saying it won't be faster, because truth be told I've never looked into it, but a lot of the reported speed improvements are down to better memory management and superficial improvements on the UI level.

I suppose what I'm saying is don't expect miracles.

I've still to switch to Windows 7 HP from the pre-order prices. Got it incase incase I get a SSD (for TRIM), but apart from that I've not had a reason to switch.

I prefer Vista browser preview pop-up over Windows 7. Keeping previews of tabs limited to one browser window instead of all windows and tabs grouped in preview.

Navigation is much improved in W7. The Libraries system is pretty efficient, as is the Taskbar and Notification Tray. The refinements to the Quick Launch are very useful, too.

ive just switched from vista to W7 had it for just over a week now.

performance wise i say you get about 5% maximum increase in general performance. bootup/shutdown etc

games performance i haven't noticed any.

only think ive noticed is its more stable at multitasking & installing updates.

im happy with W7.

My setup is i7 920 280GTX SLI 6GB DDR3 ram just to compare :)

Just to echo what people have said already.

I ran Vista Home Premium 64 for a couple of years. System would run out of resources sometimes while playing games, and generally be unresponsive at startup for a while etc. This is just a few of the issues I learned to deal with.

I since swapped to Windows 7 Ultimate 64, and haven't had a single problem with it. I would say it feels snappier but I put an SSD in when I installed W7 so I can't say much on that, as its obviously the SSD giving the speed.

7 just feels like a better Vista to me, I never had any huge issues with Vista at all.

It's just a scapegoat for the general public because they fail at using computers. :p

I'll be going with Vista 64-bit for my upcoming build. It's definately not as good as XP for gaming. Windows 7 is certainly more efficient with what you've got but I wouldn't expect massive gains in things that really boil down to the hardware, drivers and the quality of the encoder itself.I just bought a few of them.I have a new build and a couple of upgrades.I read a few things and it is a good idea to how a backup of your OS on a drive ready to swap back over the content in case it wipes out.
