Guys, has anyone else experienced Windows 8.1 bricking their systems? I just purchased a new Asus laptop for work and occasional gaming on the go, very nice system, wanted 8.1 cause I'd heard good things, installed just fine.. but then I noticed my hdd usage was at a constant 100%, I did some googling and spent a few hours trying to troubleshoot it but it kept returning, and 100% usage really does affect system response, not fun!

Is anyone able to assist? I'm doing a reinstall thing from the windows 8 setting menu atm, idk if it will restore it to just windows 8 or if I'm going to have to crack out windows 7, advice would be appreciated :)

***sorry if this topic already exists, posting from a phone and is a pain to search

Did you look in the Task Manager to see what processes were using the hard drive?

Some screenshots from the Processes and Performance (both memory and disk) tabs when the problem was occurring would have been useful.

had this 3 times,

on win 8.1 it normally search indexer running but not showing in task manager

open task manager go to performance monitor you'll see the process running

reboot fixes it. its quite rare but has happened since vista.

but on vista it used to use 99% of ram too

I rolled back to windows 8.0 - I'm tempted to go to windows 7 again to be honest, but certain features of 8 are useful, I like snapping metro apps to the sides, means I can watch youtube at work! :)

i ran the trial version of 8.1 for about a month before i ditched it. it was the search indexer kicking in while gaming that did it for me. i could alt tab out, go into services and stop it but that's not the point. i didn't want to disable the service either because i like having my files indexed but it should only do it when the pc is idle.:p
