I am attempting to install windows 8.1 on a new samsung ssd.

It gets through the initial stage copying windows files, getting files ready for installation etc fine. When it reboots it either comes up with hard disk read error or it boots to the DVD again and wants to start all over.

I have the DVD drive set as the first boot device then the ssd.

I can't figure out what's wrong with it

Could it be something in the bios?

Is this a UEFI bios on your system and is the Windows 8.1 64 bit?

If so you want 'Windows Boot Manager' in your boot order or the hard drive but prefixed with UEFI:

64 bit and uefi yes.

Should I go into the bios after the initial install because I don't see any windows boot manager option in the boot list?

My ssd only shows up as selectable on uefi and legacy mode. But not on uefi mode alone.

It's 840 pro series samsung ssd.

When I was installing 8.1 on my 830 (old Gigabyte motherboard) I had to load the SATA drivers before the installation started, otherwise it would hang at the SATA AHCI bios stage when the process was finished.

They weren't needed for Windows 7, so I initially thought it was a BIOS issue. Maybe you're facing a similar issue?

For some reason when I swapped the location of my SSD in my case (HAF X), which has a special bay with a separate power source for smaller drives it worked?

I guess one of the bays is dodgey.

Thanks for the help! ;)

Now for the fun task of reinstalling loads of drivers. :)
