Hello all, I've decided its time to do a fresh install of windows 8.1 on my system just to get rid of any errors and make sure its clean and fresh!

Basically I've tried the built in options to Refresh and / or Remove everything but nothing seems to work!

I've also booted direct from disc and it still wont do it

I'm running an SSD with the OS and programs on and a 3TB hard drive for documents, I've had it set so it defaults to this location

I thought this was causing the issue so I went and unplugged the 3tb hoping having only the SSD plugged in would let me restore my system but once I removed the 3tb I couldn't then sign in

arrrrrrrrgh someone help please

Your user folder and profile are probably on the HDD.

Plug the HDD back in so you can log in.

Then give this a try.

Is the SSD almost full, maybe it's struggling with doing a refresh / reset due to lack of room to work with?

If that doesn't work you'll want to back up anything you want to keep from the SSD file wise (not programs, unless their portable) over to the HDD and then create a fresh install media using the media creation tool downloaded from MS.

Make sure you have your Windows key(s) before going any further, Windows 8 or 8.1 and maybe Media Centre?

Then re-unplug the HDD again and boot from the install media. Use the install process option to format the SSD and wipe most if not all the partitions (assuming you don't have any user created specific partitions for anything like recovery images etc, assuming you probably wouldn't though on an SSD) and let the install process decide on how it wants to configure the drive.

Well that eventually worked somehow haha thank gos it's clean fresh and fast!!

I've installed all windows updates and it's quick!

I quickly tried upgrading and installing Windows 10 update but the app / program just closed once it got to 100% so I've gave up for tonight system refresh will resume in the morning

Sometimes it can give an appearance of not doing something whilst it may be sorting stuff out. It's also more prone to issues when using Windows Update to do the upgrade.
