Windows 8.1 - start menu won't work?

Hello.

Had a bit of a game installing 8.1 last night as none of my apps worked in 8.0 so had to re-install windows which then allowed me to access the 'store' to download 8.1.

I've now got it installed and the start menu is there but the only things I can use under the start are run, search and shut down.

If I click on any of the other items in there i.e system/device manager it does absolutely nothing. Its not the end of the world however just a little annoying that its not working?

Any help please?

Cheers
Mark

I do but not going to bother if thats what it requires! Bit of a joke really, I had to do a full re-install of windows 8 yesterday so my apps would work and so I could access the store to download 8.1. I've since had to re-install everything that this lost and don't fancy doing it all again.

Surely every time I want to do something I don't have to re-install windows and start again?

Just an enquiry here, did you upgrade over your existing setup. I know a lot of people used different ways of upgrading so they had a clean install that is all.
I upgraded over my existing install which has other software installed as well like ClassicStart8. My initial problem was downloading which seemed to take forever. I restarted it the next day and after a bit of absurd mucking around I noticed I had the new start Menu as an update before I installed Windows 8.1. I just moved my mouse into the bottom left hand corner and right clicked. ClassicStart8 doesn't have this facility, mind you the new Icon wasn't there also, so I decided to restart my PC. It went into setup installed all my devices and even aligned my GPT 3TB HD within its structure. Because I don't use Windows 8 as my primary system I don't tend to load the Drive configuration every time I boot into it because it does a system dump which means I have to load it again every time I boot into my primary OS.
The gist is that the kernel has not been configured correctly when you upgraded. Either your system was out of alignment or some device that should have been automatically configured has not been. If a reboot does not solve your problem then a bios error or overclock could be your issue.
I know from nature we have habits that are sometimes just ignored or taken for granted. Some of the things the new setup has provided me has put me in some different opinions about the OS. Some good and some bad.
I still use ClassicStart8 because it offers familiarity but I have used the Right Click Start Menu and tested it thoroughly and found everything working. Perhaps if you can submit your system details and configuration we can be of more help to you than offer vague pointers and even to the point where you have to restore your backup and start all over again. To me something is obviously causing a hardware conflict for you to get this issue, but this is me perhaps over analysing it. Help us help you. Otherwise it sounds like "my Car doesn't work." Now a car dealer would want to know what make and model and what seemed to be the problem, if you get what I mean.

Install classic start. Problem solved.

In the short term it may solve an issue but you need to find out what is causing the problem for you in the first place otherwise the problem will reoccur at a later time. Since the instrall of the update is an integral part of the operating system and one of the primary updates to the new setup. So to be half installed doesn't fit. If you have a puzzle you need to solve it and if you don't that's like saying I don't care.
What if the problem is a virus. That virus is going to go on invading the OP's computer.
A recent virus is hanging about which attaches to Graphics drivers and appears in the task manager as an IE handler but is being distributed with Nvidia drivers and some ATI drivers. So not everything is that simple.

Thanks for the replies.

The computer was built brand new and is running windows 8 pro 64bit.

Nothing is running over clocked or anything like that. The computer runs fine doing everything it should and is nice and stable its just the start menu that's not responding?

I did a fresh install off the windows disk yesterday which resolved my apps not working and installed 8.1 fine. The start button works fine and I can use the search, run and power buttons from it but not anythinfn else.

I don't have a clue about kernels etc and to be honest have no interest in all the really technical aspects of how windows works as it was never my plan.

I fully agree there is clearly a problem somewhere.

Can I revert back to 8 without doing a full reinstall and try reinstall 8.1 again to resolve the matter or do I have to do a fresh install of 8 again and then 8.1 after?

If there's anything specific you need to know to help me please let me know as I say I'm not the most tech savvy I'm afraid.

Thank you for your reply, but what we were looking for was a technical rundown on the hardware.
CPU
Ram
Graphics
Hard Disk
DVD

You see the issue could be attached to the type of CPU and Ram.
The Graphics card
Or even the Hard disk type and the way the system was installed.

If your system came with Windows 8 installed and if you have the original disks available. Systems like HP etc come with it preinstalled and a system default setup partition from which it boots from when it needs to reinstall from a new setup or a system recovery.

Either way you should still backup your system so you dont have to reinstall everything all over again.

System was built by me and all items brand new.

Are your USB 3 ports enabled on the front as well as the rear ones. e.g. have you got something plugged into them.
make sure you have the right device plugged into the right port. e.g. USB 2 HD takes longer to switch the queue when plugged intto a USB 3.0

Check that your Samsung Evo Firmware is up to date. Some people are getting BSOD in Windows 8.1 I just found a few articles on the Net. Both Crucial and Intel have updated their firmware recently so it is worth checking that this isn't your issue. I do not have a Samsung Evo to try out so cannot informatively comment any further. My Kingston HyperX Updated Flawlessly, it was just my configuration that slowed it up, because I multiboot.
