Windows 8.1 - !!WARNING!! - Defrags SSD drives by default

I'm calling this a non issue. After all, I just checked my Win 8.1 regedit on two PCs both with different SSDs and I didn't have the EnableSuperFetch value in either of them and the ReadyBoot key was already set to 0

same here

event 258 here says this
The storage optimiser successfully completed re-trim on (C : ) ( SSD)
The storage optimiser successfully completed defragmentation on (D: ) (HDD)
The storage optimiser successfully completed defragmentation on (F : ) (HDD)

so looks like its working fine here

I have report of - The storage optimiser successfully completed defragmentation on (C:

This been on going for a while has I can see in my Event viewer, Only other week I disabled this and now run the Trim from Samsung software for my SSD.

Microsoft need fix this.

The report is misleading.

%windir%\system32\dfrgui.exe

Try it for yourself.

I'd like us to get to the bottom of this. If this really is a bug then we need to act on it, otherwise if it's just wording in Event Viewer, we'll know to ignore it in future.

What do we reckon at the moment? I really hope that Microsoft have not managed to screw this up so royally, otherwise Windows 8 fails more than I originally thought! :(

I've been using Windows 8 from when released on MSDN, clean install.

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from when released on MSDN, upgraded over Windows 8.

I have checked my event logs and find NO evidence that Windows 8 or 8.1 has been defragging my SSDs. I have 3 SSDs on my system. None of them have been defragged, only the concessional re-trim.

So I conclude that ALL Windows 8 or 8.1 do not actively defrag SSDs.

Bad conclusion, considering my Event Log says the same as everyone else in this thread says does. Yours may be fine, but mine is definitely worrying me and I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

All im saying is that its not happening on every install of Windows 8.1. I should have worded it better, TBH.

So we are saying it doesn't actually defrag? Just likes to tell us it does?

You know your OS has issues when the event viewer can't even decide what is actually going on.

thats what could be happening, because if it was defrag the SSD then the SSD life would have gone to maybe 60% within at a year

I was running win8 for about year and my SSD has only lost 1% in the time.

Ah ok then. That's better. :)

Interesting way of looking at it, but I don't think it would necessarily take of 40% of the SSD's life straight off anyway. I reckon it would wear the SSD down gradually.

Post a screenshot of how your drive looks after doing Analyse in Defraggler. If it looks fragmented, then I'd say it's not defragging them.

(I haven't clicked any links in this thread)

checked mine and its 23% fragmented
so as I said in previously mine looks fine and on current use its life is given as 8 years lol
don't think i'll still be using it in 8 years

My Event Viewer says that my 2 x ssd has been defragged however you can't manually select Analyse the disk to check if this has actually happened or not.

So perhaps the Event Viewer message is not actually accurate.

EDIT: it is not even possible to defrag a ssd manually, all it does it trimms the ssd when you run it manually, it only takes like 5 sec to run/complete.

Well, my event viewer does indeed list defrag events for my SSD, the latest one happened at ten oclock last night, yet defraggler thinks that it is 33% fragmented.
Perhaps this is just event viewer not reporting things correctly.

I do have records of C: being defragged but I can't analyse the drive in Optimise drive tool.

Edit:

Might want to check discussion below, it seems that SuperFetch and Defrag work differently in Windows 8 compared to 7. Its on by default but ignores SSDs if it detects them:

Check this out too:

I think the thread title should be changed as the advice in the original links looks to be incorrect.
