windows 8.1 - windows seems to need to rebuild its knowledge of my downloads folder every time i sel

I have a small SSD with my OS and a select few programs on, therefore I keep my downloads folder on another location.

In windows 8.1 if I am in file explorer and select the downloads folder, it takes a good long whole to show me everything that is in there I would say ~30seconds at least before it displays all the files.

I set up my computer this way with windows 7 and I am fairly sure that I didn't experience the same issue.

What is likely to be the cause and is it solvable?

Is the contents stored on a local drive or network folder?

I've had the same issue on windows 8 (Can't do 8.1), think switching off the thumbs.db image cache fixed it. Take a read of the link and see if it fits the bill
