Windows 8 : antimalware service executable hogging CPU

Noticed something odd this morning. Locked the PC and walked away, came back to find the fans spinning at full speed because the cpu was at 100%

After some investigation with resource monitor I discovered that the culprit was 'antimalware service executable'

Strange thing is that this only kicks in when the monitors are in sleep :confused: Has anyone else experienced these issues ?

Another thing I noticed is that the monitors are set to sleep after 20 minutes but go to sleep very quickly if the desktop is locked (Windows+L) - This may be a 'feature' of windows 8 :confused:

if you've locked it why wouldn't you want them to turn off xD
