Windows 8. Anyone just using the built in Defender.

Note that Defender in Win 8 doesn't seem to auto update definitions unless you have the operating system set to automatically download and install all Windows Updates, unlike MSE.

It also no longer has a context menu to right click folders/files and scan.

It's being treated as part of the OS, which is why it will only update when you manually tell it to or automatically if the OS does.

Little point having an updated AV if you skip OS updates though, bit like plugging a hole with donut.

I only use Microsoft updates when i think something is worth updating. Been doing this for many many years with no issues what so ever. This is why i use Avast. It updates itself fine. With Defender/essentials, updates need to be activated.

Disaster waiting to happen.

Avast ughhhh don't you find it incredibly annoying

I usually run MSE when i go to bed everynight update and scan. but then I am the only user of my computer so accidents don't happen very often.

Really there shouldn't be problems with Defender. I am not sure how often Windows does its updates but its worth mentioning one can set the time it does them. By default mine was set to 0300 when my machine was off - I've reset that now.

I've used MSE all the time since I had Windows 7 without any problems. Even if Kaspersy is very cheap I'm not sure it worth it as Defender (MSE) are very good.

I’m using Kasperky Internet Security 2013 as I get it for free with my Barclays bank account.

Was planning on using Defender but i think I will stick with Kasperky for now.

I was using it during the release preview program but I still don't quite fully trust it. It was too quiet. LOL. So I reinstalled NOD32. I like to be told when virus updates are installed, etc.

Have you ever seen your AV detect anything?

I've not seen a single virus on my own machine for ~10 years

Using defender here.

Was planning on Nod32, but this is doing it's job just fine, plus i stay away from dodgy sites.

Run malwarebytes once in a while just in case.
