Hey all,

Wasn't sure if this has been posted, but some nice fellows have come up with a way for you to utilize all the new goodies of windows 8, without the CARP of Metro(or whatever they want to call it now).

its called classic shell and can be had from here http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/files/

You can even disable Metro all together!

See the good ol' reg for details.

Can this save windows 8??? For myself, this might just persuade me to at least buy the upgrade and test it out...

Thanks

I'm having a play with the RTM (from TechNet) on a Duel Boot with Windows 7, and was showing it to the Wife last night.

First thing she said was "What are all those 'Square' things!!??" and then when I went to the Desktop "Where's the Round Button Thing???"

so this might help!! :D

I must say I do rather like the idea behind this shell.

Now that the RTM version is available, it might even persuade me to have another look at Windows 8!

Are there any 'downsides' to it, which anyone is aware of?

Not that i have found, installed absolutely fine, works as described!

I think this (or similar) is the ideal solution for those who absolutely don't want the UI chanages. You get a Start menu, Microsoft get a sale. Win/win

It just goes to show that there must be enough in the Windows 8 "desktop" to warrant upgrading.

But for Microsoft, a sale isn't enough. They want to you to buy apps from the Store and people remaining on the desktop is hurting their Store profits.

I want Windows 8 but I don't want metro, this means I can try it now.

I like lots of the new features, just a shame they had to ruin it with metro.

Thinking the same TBH Nick, this was the only thing I didn't like about Windows 8 although granted I think I'd probably get use to it and tweak it to suit myself.

Might give it a go, not sure I'd disable metro though - think I just need to get use it once full version is purchasable!

You're greatly overestimating the amount of people who are going to go to these lengths to get back the old Start menu. The overwhelming majority are just going to get used to the new UI.

If it's a choice between you sticking with Windows 7 or buying Windows 8 and retrofitting the old menu MS will take the latter every single time.

Looks very promising, gotta love what the open source community achieve and respond to bs. Supposedly w8 improves on security from what I read in another thread here so still think it's valid to upgrade. Won't hurt app sales as I wouldn't be buying them for the pc. If their tablets excel and I buy 1 then I'll buy apps for that. Doubt I would use those same apps on a pc unless I didn't have the tablet with me, so maybe on a laptop. Unless of course they tighten the integration and make metro and desktop background combined into one.

Its a shame we have to resort to using this, I don't see why MS will not give us the option to disable metro.

Might just give it a try now.
