Windows 8 HTC

I'm not taking it personally, some of your issues are real. Just some aren't some of the issues are purely not knowing the system, others are wrong assumptions. As you said its a rant more than factual.
If you were expecting as many apps, that was foolish, however it still had many good apps. It all depends if you are an app who're or not. Best thing is to make a list of apps you use and see if they or alternatives are available.

I have several android devices all be it pc on a stick rather than phone although have had android phones in the past and ditched an ip4 for the Lumia 520 and it makes perfect sense, after a learning curve, but then ios had a learning curve as did android. Wp8 is in the middle which is perfect for me. android is to open and to get the best you really do need to far with custom toms, while Ios is to shut down and not even Dd card slots. Wp8 is a halfway house, they have minimum specs which makes any phone tune smoothly, SD cards, USB etc.

I wasn't expecting anything. Something new to try and all that :)

80% of my apps on Android are simply not available. Many are games such as popular Facebook ones.

I agree it is a rant, but most of it is true and are niggles and im sure in time will be sorted but I feel like a tester. Its far from polished and so is Android for that matter.

Its like chalk and cheese they are both totally different in what the do. All come to what you prefer.

Ill try a Nokia. Are they really that different?

Its still wp8 but you get all the Nokia apps, which are fantastic, some have been released in the store like Nokia here maps, but not all them.

They have the folder app, so you can make folders instead of just live tiles.
They have block calls/txt messages settings. Then depending on phone (520 doesn't support a lot) things like glance screen, pro camera app and other features. But then again 520 has a pretty rubbish camera.

So yes and no. Its still wp8 it'll look and feel the same. But you'll have access to all Nokia apps and some other setting options. I don't think it would be worth your time as the apps you want aren't there. If you want to give it a try probably better coming back in ~march when wp8.1 should be out and hopefully more apps.

Ok ill give a Nokia a try :)

The HERE Navigation app is brilliant and free. Best bit of Navigation software I have used. Not sure if it works offline?

Looking forward to try the Nokia apps. The HTC ones are pants. It has a live tile and its pants haha it cannot detect my location for weather when Navigation and Bing Weather works perfect.

Any tips etc to maybe try get some use out of the HTC? You mention notification bar will get an update. Would this make it static and always visible? Quite strange not seeing what im connected to ie open wifi or 3G without exiting an app.

Yep works offline or you probably have to pay on htc. 520 you get uk turn by turn free and higher end ones the world or most of it. Some of the camera apps on the higher end Lumina are fantastic, all sorts of motion, refocusing, settings etc.

You can see latest big app releases here http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/apps/lumia-apps/

But if you are lacking that many apps you use then probably isn't worth trying a Nokia yet.

The next update GDR3 is starting to roll out now as well. But 8.1 will be a much big update.

Apps are a strange one. All the big one like youtube and Facebook mention Microsoft as a publisher. Are these not made by the actual company? And the Youtube app seems to be an internet explorer version.

Microsoft has made a lot of the apps to plug the gaps until' the marketshare gets significant enough for people to start making their, which has started vine and a lot of other apps have been released recently, as Google won't.
That YouTube app is rubbish. Metrotube is a very good YouTube app,

This is basically what I'm using at the moment.

Audible
Metro tube
Runtastic pro
Trainline
Netflix
Nokia drive
IMDB (pretty rubbish)
eBay
Bing news
Nokia here maps
Avirall - timer app
BBc iplayer
Kick track - kick starter project follower (but pretty darn rubbish)
Skydrive
Imgur - picture uploader
tvguide
Orcado
Adobe reader
Battery performance
Dominos
Geogps - map app
Nokia here transit
Metroreads - goodreads app (missing some features)
Natwest
Nokia music
One note
Oyster buddy - Oyster card app
Podcast lounge
Speed test.net
True Callander 8
Tv catch up
Tubemap
Twitter

Personally only missing skygo but never used it much anyway.

Having come from a Samsung Omnia 7 to an HTC One about 6 months ago I'm not sure where this argument that games on WP are rubbish comes from! I still can't find many good games on Android, most are either rubbish or look good but end up unplayable because they are designed for both tablet and mobile downloads. Fine, designing a game to scale for a 1080p screen is great, if you have a 10" tablet. Unfortunately on a 4.7" screen the buttons are unpressable and the text is almost impossible to read...

I used to play loads of games on my omni a. I can't remember all of them but Jetpack Joyride was awesome, same with a WW1 flying game and other flying games, alongside plenty of funky 3D games. No, they weren't big iOS or Android games, they were exclusive to WP... Android in general really seems to lack good games, whether that be on mobile (beaten by WP and iOS) or tablet (destroyed by iOS).

The biggest issue with people and apps on WP is expecting exactly the same apps as Android... All the big ones are there but there are tens of thousands of unique apps on WP (many superb ones made by Nokia and MS studios) that people seem to ignore because WP's 100,000+ app catalogue doesn't have the number 7 best app on Android...

I'm really tempted to pick up the 1520 to replace my Nexus 4.
I don't game or use social networking, so the phone has to be bang
on for productivity, calender and emails.

If WP8 good in these areas?

..but I don't trust Android.

I actually feel like this when it comes to checking my bank. I'd rather use the iPad as I feel more secure on iOS than I do on Android.

I have tried a HTC 8X and I was confused at what those producing the apps must have been thinking, with basic features missing compared to their iOS and Android counterparts.

Don't trust android ?! Oh no Google are secretly stealing your bank details, they are taking over the world don't you know...

Yep, security wise Droid is a black hole, and I don't want Google anywhere near my data, done my very best to distance myself from them as much as is possible now.

Pretty much everyone associates Android with Malware now. They got my brothers bank details off his Nexus 10, and had the cheek to phone his bank asking to reset his memorable information login.

I've never had any issues with malware or my bank details bring stolen and I've been using android since froyo, maybe I've been lucky, or maybe I'm to careful and don't do or use silly things that will cause problems on my phone.

Brothers principle programmer in the company he works for, he also has no idea how they got his bank details, must have been a key logger and they were monitoring the sites he used. Either way he'll never use android for anything but casual browsing anymore!

Bullcrap.

How does he know they were acquired via his tablet and not any of the other numerous methods?

You keep those rose tinted glasses on!

I have a Nexus 7, fully aware of the flashlight apps etc that need full access to your GPS, phone book, etc, sucking the data out of your phone!
