Hi

I'm planning to do a clean install of Windows 8. I have Steam on a second drive along with all my games. I understand I'll need to re-install Steam so all the registry entries can be made and stuff like that, but can I just install over the top and leave the files for all the existing games as they are? Will it pick up all the games, and will those that add files to other locations such as the games folder on the system drive be okay?

I'm guessing other people have been in a similar situation, I could use the steam back-up utility but that always seems to take an age.

Cheers.

Simply run steam.exe the first time by right clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator". This will do any required stuff, and from then on, you can just run steam.exe as normal (without having to be an Administrator)

On some, rare occurrances, you may need to delete the clientregistry.blob file.

Other than that - you need to do nothing with regards to Steam and games.

However - before you do so, be sure to back up any savegames that aren't in your Steam directory, check these with something like GameSave Manager (particularly your GFWL Profile if you have any GFWL games such as DiRT2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, else you'll lose your savegames)

Excellent, thanks.

And cheers for mentioning game saves, I didn't have that on my 'things to remember to backup before wiping' list.
