Hey.

Ok this isn't really a big issue but it bugs me and has for some time. My PC is Windows 8.1, and I linked the main account to my hotmail account.

When the PC turns on, I get the usual background image, to which I then click and get the screen where I need to type in my password.

Now at this stage, if on autopilot and type my password in, it says it is incorrect. Reason for this that I discovered quickly however, is that the very first letter I type is not entered in the box....so everytime I enter my password I have to type in the very first letter twice.....very annoying.

Does anyone know why this is/how to prevent it? Not a huge issue but useful to know if I can stop it (other than setting PC to auto login)

Just make the first letter of your password a capital. Pressing shift opens the password box.

But yeah, annoying.

ah so its not just me then? Even when I click with the mouse to bring up the password view, and then click the mouse in the box where I type the password before beginning to type I still need to do it twice. It currently doesn't begin with a capital but will try that on next reboot and see what happens

I didn't pay attention until I read your thread here. That must have been why it used to throw out incorrect password and I re-typed it thinking I was getting old..

You can turn this feature off to unlink it from your online login to a local login. (Well the last installation I did this anyway). If you don't have cloud uses and many apps then its another option.

I was wondering about that - I read you can 'unlink' it - but didn't fancy trying it just yet in case it also messed with my profile (I also use the One Drive for My Documents too)....but it would probably solve my SMB share path issue I have with accessing c$ etc paths between 2+ Win8 machines after linking the main admin account with 3 seperate hotmail accounts on 3 diff pcs

I have a couple of workbench only PC's used the evaluation versions for a while then my new licenses. One is used for sandboxing and testing and doesn't need M$ blanket access, I also tried it on an old laptop to see if it would run well.

That's the moment I dropped the online login as it was completely unnecessary and only required for my personal rig. :)

so I'm guessing you lose no desktop icons or other forms of data when you unlink the account. I have to do a fresh install of my daughters computer this week coming anyways so will unlink hers after backed up what need to.

Yeah try it Midnight, it still works as older versions of windows would. You would only be inconvenienced if you were a die hard sync-er and used the new apps/onedrive features.

cheers :) Only perk for my 2 kids accounts, is the auto login I guess will keep their hotmail accounts alive (as they don't really use them) but handy to keep active, as has their minecraft accounts linked (and always worth having additional addresses for signing up for junk :))

This pee'd me off too. Just disable the lock screen in local group policy

gpedit.msc
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Personalization -> Do not display the lock screen

yeah its super annoying lol.

Whilst I can disable the lock screen, I still have to double press the first letter for it to work. I can confirm though it is fine IF you use a capital for your first letter of password
