Hi all,

Just finished building this PC this afternoon:

588983653129371762662388.jpg

Fresh installed Windows 8 Pro x64 onto an Agility 3 120GB SSD which previously had windows 8 on it and was running fine. The PC was absolutely fine for an hour then in quick succession I had 3 errors! All were WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR to do with Hal.dll.

I had WhoCrashed up to copy out the stop code but it keeps blue screening when I boot, so now posting from the iPad.

Any ideas? Appreciate it.

Also, this was a fresh install of Windows 8 using their tool to produce bootable USB...but when I launch IE10 my homepage is MYStart Incredibar....that's definitely malware! How is that possible on a fresh, formatted install?

In safe mode running malware bytes and windows defender as we speak.

Just re-installed Windows....

Where did you download the Win8 ISO file from?
And what other software have you installed?

http://www.im-infected.com/hijacker/mystart-by-incredibar-mystart-incredibar-com.html

The ISO was the one linked in the confirmation e-mail from Microsoft when I first bought Windows 8. You can download it, then either save the ISO or create media - I created a USB.

Windows Defender was turned on, the only things I installed before putting Malwarebytes on was CPU-Z, GPU-Z, HWMonitor & Unigine Heaven.

Lets start with the RAM I dont see them listed in the Image do you have a link to the OCUK site of the RAM you have?

Does the PC enter the BIOS?
Do you only crash once in Windows?
Have you setup the RAM timing and Voltage setting in the BIOS? theses will be found on the package or the side of the RAM.
I see you running an SSD did you format the drive before installing Windows? Is there any firmware updates?
And is there any BIOS update for your motherboard?

I have 16GB Kingston HyperX Genesis. I put all 16GB through 30+ hours of MemTest last year because I was having troubles with Windows 7 Home Premium - upgraded to Windows 8 Pro resolved those issues. The only BIOS change (not overclocked the i5 yet) was to go in and change the RAM from 1333mhz to 1600mhz as that is what they are rated at.

2 crashes were inside Windows (loading up Nazi Zombies then browsing), then I was hitting them on boot. Windows login screen would load, then BSOD.

Formatted the SSD via the Windows 8 installer before installing, yes.

I'm on the F10 BIOS, which seems is quite out of date (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4144#bios) worth upgrading?

I think now that I've re-installed Windows 8, I'll update the BIOS and see how we get on..

DONT Update BIOS IN WINDOWS!

Download and flash inside the BIOS Windows is known to Brick motherboard when updating BIOS through them.

If you going to Update Bios go with F16 has F17 is a beta BIOS so that alone might have beta issue witch you dont need right now.

I used the Gigabyte utility to update to F16, it went through fine (confirmed in the BIOS).

I`m always a bit careful as to what sites I d/load software from. So it may be that one of these ,CPU-Z, GPU-Z, HWMonitor & Unigine Heaven contained MYStart Incredibar.
I have the same ISO I used to install Win8, but have not installed any other software and so don`t have MYStart Incredibar on my PC.

It must have been something I downloaded as soon as I booted into the fresh install...I would have thought Win Defender picked it up!

I have the HyperX Genesis Grey. not the Blue unfortunately. I will go back into BIOS and check the DRAM settings, I chose the XMP profile which put it @ 1600MHZ and that was it.

So far so good on this fresh install...time to try gaming ... again. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the help so far.

No, I knew that little bit of malware didn't cause the BSOD's but I thought it was odd how it got on there, so thought I'd let you guys know!

**** sake! Hitting it again.

Managed to play Blops2 for a bit and run all of the 3D Mark11 tests without issue...was browsing OCUK forums and BSOD.

Now whenever it restarts I just get past loading screen and it happens again...rebooted then immediately bsodded, but now I'm back in. Details to follow.

Ok I own the same RAM. Go back into the BIOS and see if you have an XMP option if so select it and check the Timing are 9-9-9-27 2N if not set them manually.
Next the Voltage XMP or BIOS wont set this up correct so you need to do it yourself (Test Voltage: 1.50-1.65V) set this to 1.575 for 1600mhz is what I run

Default you could be running 1.65 witch is not good LGA1155 cpus.

This your RAM?
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-112-KS

The RAM is running at 1.50v. Going to run MDSCHED and see if it passes...it's done 30 hours of memtest86 not too long ago, I doubt it's the RAM to be honest!

124 bsod is cpu v too low on sb/ib,can also be memory but mainly cpu

if your getting whea errors that also points to cpu v too low, either add one/two clicks more dvid or one level higher llc

also set cpu voltage response to fast in the bios, whether overclocked or not it will help with stability

Cpu Vcore is default; ranges from 0.9 to 1.1v. I'll have a look at the 'Fast' option in BIOS shortly. Are you referring to this? http://www.gigabyte.com/microsite/306/images/3d-power.html

What I thought the ntoskrnl.exe is the Windows kernel witch controls memory management. This can be RAM and hard drive in your case SSD.

So you need to check SSD with some software? not sure what software is out there you could run though.

Did you also set the RAM to 1.575v? Since this is your second Windows install they is no doubt its an hardware issue you have going on.

I went into BIOS and DRAM settings, I can see the DRAM Voltage is set at 1.65v but its greyed out, as-in, I can't seem to edit it...

I'll look for some software to check SSD health. From my point of view, I'm going to try and eliminate possibilities.

1) Graphics card - I ran the 3D Mark 11 bench and Unigine Heaven, plus a fair bit of Blops 2/PoE without a crash.

2) Memory - I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic without issue. Will try memtest86+ for a few hours this afternoon.

3) CPU - Downloading Prime95 right now, to see if I get any errors/BSODs whilst running it.

4) SSD - will try and check health.

5) Motherboard - what can I do to check this???

Ran into a BSOD 3 minutes into Prime95 running Blend tests. What should I run to just target CPU?

I have loaded BIOS defaults and will try running again...all I had changed was the memory profile, the i5 is completely out of the box...

Right, ran Prime95 with stock DRAM settings (667Mhz) and it got through without BSOD!

So, it would appear the issue is RAM related when I try running it at its correct (1600MHZ not 1333MHZ) speed.

Any suggestions? This is it currently:

838605361573967537675191.jpg

This is what CPU-Z is showing for the i5, with BIOS defaults:

31513246472094426073572.png

Isn't the Vcore high? Note: this was during a Blend test run...

EDIT: So, when BIOS Optimized Defaults are loaded, Prime95 runs fine. When XMP Memory Profile is selected, I get WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. I went into BIOS and used your settings Shankly, so timings: 9-9-9-27 and DRAM Voltage 1.575. Got into Windows, fired up Blend test and instantly WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR Blue Screened. I then tried the manufacturers settings for 1600MHZ (the XMP-1600 column on the SPD tab), which meant upping the voltage to 1.65v, and that also Blue Screened.

So it looks like running the RAM at its correct speed is causing this...which is odd, because on my old PC I had all 16GB running at 1600MHZ using an XMP Profile and that was fine.

I then reverted the RAM to BIOS default; and thought I'd try OC'ing the CPU by its self, so set the multiplier to 38 (3.8Ghz). So this was with the CPU @ 3.8Ghz and RAM @ 667Mhz, I ran Prime95 Blend and Blue Screened almost instantly! So that was without touching the RAM settings - is this an issue with the CPU, or is the CPU overclock linked to the RAM in some way?

Full system specs:
i5 3570k (running at completely stock)
16GB PC3-12800 Kington HyperX Genesis Grey (having to run at PC3-10700 to prevent BSOD'ing :( )
Gigabyte Z77X-D3H
Gigabyte 7970 GHZ
Agility3 120GB SSD
XFX 850w PSU

what bios are you using? flashed to the latest one off gigabyte website? put it onto a usb memory stick and flash with qflash from within the bios

F16 - the latest stable release.

The Ram Voltage grayed out you must be able to change this setting. I never known a board to not let you change the voltage.

1.65v is to high for sandy bridge and ivy bridge you want to be running ram @1.5 for 1300mhz and 1.575 for 1600mhz

If you have XMP selected try switching this off and see if you can change then? if so double check the timings also.

I can change this, I was looking in the wrong place. I've tried 1.50v, 1.575v, 1.65v @ 1600MHZ with the recommended timings, all resulting in BSOD..

Run Memtest86 for couple hours then I say for about 3 full passes. Dont use Windows memory test its not as good has Memtest86.

Run the test on stock RAM settings to make sure reset the BIOS to default settings.

Will try MemTest86+, but, as I can see from Prime95 the memory seems stable @ 667Mhz but instantly crashses @ 800Mhz. So running at 667Mhz might result in no errors and give me no further information - so is it not best to try running at 800Mhz?

Re my other point - I tried just OC'ing the CPU and leaving the RAM @ 667Mhz but this still BSOD'ed - can this be attributed to the RAM, or is it likely an issue with the CPU too?

*sigh*

Thought everything was hunky dory @ stock settings but just had another 0x124 WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR whilst playing PoE...so annoying, Prime95 blend ran for an hour fine, but PoE crashes it...

Thanks guys. Wazza, could you run me through what to set for CPU voltages? It ranges from 0.9 (1600mhz idle) to 1.21 (3800mhz load).

Is that not sufficient you think?

It's all stock by the way...nothing OC'ed/been modified.

Something fairly conservative. 4.0 or 4.2 to begin with. I'll mirror your set-up apart from a multiplier of 42...report back shortly!

Tried all of that bar the memory settings (set mine to 1600mhz using the manufacturers spec 9-9-9-27) and it crashes 30seconds into a blend test!!!!

I just want to get it stable at normal speeds tbh...but not even that is working!!!! Default CPU at 3.4 and under clocked RAM at 667mhz still caused it to crash!!!

Changed CPU Voltage Response to FAST and 100MHZ BLCK to 100, crashed within 1 minute of Prime95 Blend test. Note, this was at stock CPU speeds and 1600MHZ RAM speeds.

I then took the case downstairs, removed the motherboard from the case (removed all connections), took the CPU cooler off and re-seated the CPU, re-seated all 4 RAM sticks, put everything back together, re-installed Windows 8 (again!!), installed Gigabyte chipset drivers (again!!), installed 13.1 AMD gfx drivers (again!!) went into BIOS to change RAM to 1600Mhz (as it should be).

Boot into Windows & downloaded Prime95, and it CRASHED 1 MINUTE INTO THE BLEND TEST AGAIN!!!!!!!

I am just creating a bootable USB of Memtest86+ to run overnight and will report back to the thread in the morning. That will be a good 12+ hours. If no errors show up for the memory, what is the next step? Can it be an issue with the CPU or motherboard its self???
