I'm trying to copy files from my laptop hard drive which has Windows 7 installed on it to my HTPC which has Windows 8 installed on it before I take my laptop away to be fixed and I have a problem in that I can't seem to copy certain filetypes such as *.exe and *.rar plus files from folders that had some files be able to be copied while others of the same type (8.txt, for example) couldn't be copied.

Basically, I get what's known as the "open error: access is denied" message whether I'm using TeraCopy or Windows Explorer and even though I'm using my Administrator account and try to fix the problem myself, I still can't seem to fix it.

I'd like to hear any ideas on how I can fix it if possible as I need to get it up and running again for university.

Use roadkills unstoppable copier or just take an image using macrium reflect which you can then mount as a virtual drive and access everything.

Folder properties, security tab, Advanced. Then add permissions for your user giving yourself full control.

If that fails you will need to make yourself the Owner first - it's in the same place.

In both Vista and Seven ( can't remember xp or 2k as im getting to old) it would say when you try and access files you don't own if you want to set permission to do so, so a bit surprised if they have removed this in 8 but then again its possible.
