Hi when the earlier version of windows 8 consumer came out it worked but i try and install the new Windows 8 Release Preview it says that my cpu is not compatible. So will windows 8 be compatible with a q6600 CPU when fully released. By then i hope to have a new PC well by next week i hope to have brought a new PC but just was wondering with it saying not compatible with my CPU now.

Thanks for the link it worked. Been looking all weekend.

I installed the consumer version when that came out and didn't like it but just wanted to see if there where any improvements on the release preview. Installed on spare Hard drive and I must say I will not be buying when it comes out if you don't need and sticking with windows 7. It feels like a downgrade more then a upgrade as well and just doesn't feel right. Apart from the spell checker :D lol

If i can get it for under £40 i MIGHT get it. I think it would be good on a media PC connected to my TV and would also allow me to do a bit of light gaming otherwise i would go linux / xbmc if steam linux comes out before then i'll just use that tho. Having it on my main PC was frustrating to say the least. I found doing multiple things at the same time much more bothersome, with the start/windows button gone, having to go into metro. They obviously have not acted on any user feedback. It'll be interesting because when win8 comes out it will be obvious that linux will be much easier to use. i can see apple selling a few more macs too.

I tried it and did not like it at all BUT then i went to an RM (research machines) Technical seminar (Im an IT Technician for a college) and they are working closely with microsoft (because Rm will roll out windows 8 with a set of mangement tools and other options designed for education) and they did a presentation of windows 8 and explained a lot of the features and ive got to say after that i was more impressed by windows 8 yes it has changed a lot you have the metro style apps you lose the start button.

But some of the features are very good. as i said it has changed a lot and thats why people dont like it because we havent had such a big change from microsoft for ages they have just added features on.

I was under the impression that you were able to switch back to a traditional desktop UI if you wanted to. Is this no longer the case?

The desktop is still there, but, with the loss of the start/windows button, doing things with the system takes extra effort. When i first used it i was completely lost tbh, and it took a (what i would describe as overly) long time to find my way around. A little "how to" would have helped the situation, it's just so alien. You can set your desktop with shortcuts but you might as well set a tile on metro for your common apps. I found metro not to be a problem tbh, its different so takes a bit of getting used to. Its the fact that doing numerous things is a LOT more annoying as it takes more time/effort.

I tried windows 8 , turns your pc into a tablet , deleted after 10 mins !!!!

tried it on my tablet laptop. It actaully makes sense on there and feels like it actually gives the touchscreen a purpose. I might even go as far a saying i like it.

However, i wouldn't let it anywhere near my desktop.

I think they are doing you a favor - wait for Win9 after they have learned their lesson in forcing this nonsense Metro on your desktop

i installed it the other night on my Acer Iconia W500 and it actulaly improves that.

Its more responsive and uses less resources and a lot faster.

I will get it on that. Only becuase i don't have to pay as i will get it free through msdn.

As far as main desktop goes not a chance in hell.

Too much hassle with shortcuts to get to everything. and no propper desktop.

Why do people fail to understand that metro is only a start menu. The desktop is pretty similar to windows 7. It also uses its resources better than windows 7 so I fail to understand all this hate tbh.

maybe because the majority of us think its garbage? including me?

if you dont have a touch screen metro is useless.

if the desktop is the same as Win 7, then why get 8?
