Windows 8 User thread

Unbelievable ! Just did the idiot test ...

Handed the wife the laptop upgraded with windows 8, metro disabled and 3 gigs of RAM and guess what ?

She wants Joli OS back and that was only running with 1gig of RAM - D'Oh.

Seriously if you want google apps and Chrome then you'll find nothing is as fast as Joli on notebooks

Shame it doent show the cpu cores in task manager, and yeh the start menu is a tad odd. Anyone using a decent dispay driver in virtual box,, as its feels very slow and can only get a max res of 1600x1200?

I think from most of the comments that windows 8 is going to be the next vista, not so much because of performance issues but because of the funky new metro UI.

I think they should keep the windows phone 7 OS for the smartphone and extend it to the tablet market and keep it's UI separate from the mainstream desktop and laptop segments.

Most people like Win 8. Most of the comments around are good... have you been reading too many posts from groen? :p

And putting WP7 on tablets is bad move. The whole point of putting Win 8 on these devices is to actually make them useful. On the iToy or Android tablets, you still have to use a real OS in order to do work, or to actually make any of the apps for these cut down mobile OS's. On Win 8 you have ALL the fucntionality of a real OS on a tablet. You could connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor to a Win 8 tablet turning it into a full desktop PC. Then just unplug it all when you want to take the tablet outside or lay on the sofa. For many people these Win8 tablets will completely replace there laptops or even there desktop, something you cant do with Apples junk or Android.

Simply right click on the CPU graph, "Change Graph To > Logical Processors" ...

I had to same problems. The only way i got it running smooth in virtualization was with VMware. Once it's installed i had to then install "VMware tools" and it stopped the UI lagging.

My Intel E4300 Core 2 Duo CPU doesn't have virtualisation, so no way to use VM software.

I created a system restore of my C: drive, but apprehensive about doing a clean install over my programs and user files.

System restore only shows 65MB as max usage of system protection and I've never done a system restore.

Ideally, I want to clean install Windows 8, try it for a bit and then go back to how I left Windows 7.

What's the best way to do this?

I've read it's possible to dual boot but that would require me getting partition software and then messing with my OS drive.

Thanks.

you don't need virtualisation tech in the cpu to run a 32bit virtual machine. that's only required for 64bit virtual machines.

i have an e5200 which isn't capable of VT either and have been running 32bit windows 8 in a virtual machine just fine.

I dont think I'll bother with all of that as its just a quick test to see what its like, plus vmware is only a 30day trail. Thanks

Im I rightly thinking that the cpu and motherboard only needs virtualisation if you want a 64bit ver of windows to run?

i'm hoping the free vmware player will have been released by time my workstation trial runs out. it's already bundled with workstation as version 4.0 so it's complete and fully functional. it just hasn't been released as a separate download yet.

I've just installed on a separate partition to have a bit of a play around, but when I reboot there is no option to boot with Windows 7 or 8 as seen here , not really sure where to go from here.

Its defiantly on the new partition I created and not overwritten my Win7 local partition, any advise?

After playing with Windows 8 for a bit I can definitely see the potential.

Will definitely be looking to get a touch screen monitor once it rolls out too. =)

So you get no option to boot into Windows 7? A solution from http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Fo...l/thread/87164fb9-1200-46f5-bd9f-fe9e6985aa6f is:

The same thing was happening with me but fixed it now. If you have installed properly by creating a new partition and still can't see the graphical boot loader, just do the following:
1. Boot from a Windows 7(not 8!) boot DVD/USB.
2. After initial loading, select Repair your computer.
3. Select Startup repair.
4. It will reboot and you should see Windows 7 as an option in the Windows 8 bootloader now.
Hope this helps.

I think my install rebooted straight into Windows 8 during install but has now reverted to flashing up the "Windows Developer Preview" screen then giving me the graphical boot loader. On an early install I did select Windows 7 as my default which seems to have switched to using the Windows 7 boot loader but I still had Windows 8 as an option.

I'll try that in a minute, thanks.

For now I've selected my first disk to boot from manually as I had Windows 8 installed on a partition on the second, either luck or foresight of having an issue!

I'll hunt down my install disk for windows 7 and see if it resolves it, would be nice to have a graphical boot loader instead of using the BIOS each time.

Just installed. Runs very nicely in VMWare 8 with 1GB RAM assigned.

First impression is that I like the Metro UI, I like the improvements to the standard UI (even the Explorer ribbon) - but the way the two UIs are integrated is, at present, pretty awkward on a desktop PC.

It looks like Metro is supposed to replace the traditional Start menu. But flicking in and out of it just to launch a desktop app is far too laborious and slow. I can only assume that the final version will have an option to make the Start button launch a standard menu instead of Metro - seems pretty much essential on desktop PCs.

I've been saying to my friends for a long time that I no longer need the desktop... My desktop consists of a single icon; the recycle bin. I think if all my applications can be shown on Metro and launched from Metro, much like iOS and Android I would dump the desktop altogether... I'm quite excited about what I see.

I would love to see Steam with a Metro interface, along with other providers... Seemless access to all the stores and programs without leaving a simple interface... Great for PC gaming in the lounge, and really for work on the PC in general; for me at least!
