Windows 9 is actually what Microsoft wants to sell you

Because they have no desire in learning it. Which is a problem because MS isn't trying to sell this to you. Its trying to sell it to them. The consumers can simply buy something that works for them. Or not buy anything. They really don't care.

Its a common problem, techies only looking at a problem from their perspective. Because they are isolated in their tech bubble.

Problem is it does work and does not take long to learn but some consumers have got so lazy that spoon feeding them is the only option, sad when you consider this is the 21st century when we are moving forward etc but some users are going back to caveman days.

Also consider every modern equipment has some learning curve from hi tech TV to mobile smartphone.

Big difference between tech bubble and being lazy/unwilling to learn even basic stuff.

You're missing the point. You have to make people want what you're selling. Betmax/VHS.

As for not thinking from someone else perspective. That flash video. Flash is blocked where I am. It doesn't work on my phone so I can't get round it that way. But if you can see it, you'd not even consider that others can't.

Yep pro OEM (which is retail - another blunder, as people didn't and still don't know the licensing was changed to virtually retail license and retail dropped) is like £110. And normal version £75

I still can't fathom why people dislike metro at home. It's a god send for casual computing. Use it every day on any device. No more loading websites for email, weather etc. Far better for Netflix, youtube etc. And some great apps like package tracker.

You didn't need to load websites for those things, email clients like outlook have been very popular since windows 95, as are weather widgets.

You seem to be talking about marketing and salesmanship rather then what I was trying to say,ie you have to have some level of competence with anything you use,it's not like Windows is not simple, you can't really dumb down Windows or Win8 for that matter much more.

Microsoft do have a strong monopoly in the OS market as well.

I use metro all the time on my Windows 8.1 machine, it doesn't really bother me.
Windows 7 at work, and switching between them both is no great shakes. It's all down to personal preference though I think.

A touch UI on a desktop, wasn't the best move by Microsoft though. But I think they are wanting to change that with Windows 9.

You're only looking at it from the "techie" perspective.

Most people have no interest in computers.

Yup. Why would anybody spend £100/£150/whatever on something they don't need?

For anyone with Vista/7, they have an OS which works. As they don't likely upgrade their hardware, all the components are working OK with Vista/7 already. Vista/7 is fine with all today's software.

So how are you going to sell Win8 to these people with no IT interest?

"All the things you can do with your current OS, Win8 can do them too."
"But I could carry on with what I've got and pay nothing?"
"Sure, or you could upgrade to Win8 and give us £100/£150/whatever."

Again it boils down to compelling reasons for upgrading since it is not free. Breaking it down to £5/month is meaningless because most people will have other things they'd rather spend that £5 on. Even if its just a sandwich :p

Who wants to throw away money? Even if it's not a lot of money? If I asked you for £5 a month for no tangible benefit you'd probably tell me to naff off :p

Probably 95% of people with Win8 got it with their new computer, rather than buying it stand-alone.

Most of Microsoft sales are through OEMs etc same was for XP,Vista,Win7 so Win8 is no different,I actually upgraded my Win7 PCs to 8 on two of my computers,as to cost if people are that worried stick with Linux since no cost involved and free upgrades all the time with better security ,most cases it's just a simple installation with a complete package, too bad Microsoft has the monopoly or we all would have jumped ship long ago,the only reason I stay with Windows is gaming, cost has nothing to do with it in my case.

They want or are persuaded they want that.

They don't want metro/modern or at least MS hasn't persuaded them.

Half the time they don't have a clue,I remember somebody moaning years ago about their coffee cup holder breaking, turned out they were using their CD-Rom drive for holding a cup of coffee lol...

Everyone I've shown how to use it, likes it within a few weeks. Due to the simplicity of it. The email app wins most people over compared to opening up and manually checking a website. Obviously those running outlook/thunderbird are different, but that's a few small percentage of home users.

Ms could have eased a lot of issue, by having a decent tutorial, unlike the piece of rubbish they included.

I want to know what app you use for youtube? Because every single metro one I have tried has been crap compared to the website with magic actions.

I did say years ago, point being nothing much has changed nowadays, fact is half the people don't have a clue what they really want or really need, even then do they have the competency to use it.

MS seem determined to make them more confused.

I'd love to experience the views of a large number of people on this topic debate compared to a forum for kicks. I'd imagine it would be quite a lengthly experience.

I can't remember what I saw the other day when somebody said, people don't know what they want until they see it.

But they know what they don't like when they're forced to use it ;)

Desktop PCs needed a UI optimised for tablets and phones like a fly needs concrete wings.

Plus nobody was asking for a confusing, non-intuitive experience, and weren't happy when that's exactly what they got (on release). Just look at the number of articles written on where to find the shutdown button, lol. Or how to get to the logon screen.

MS really need to re-learn the basics of a functional UI. And bring back Aero Glass :(
