Some new information about Windows 9 has surfaced over at Chiploco.com. This gives a much anticipated glimpse into what the developer version and probably the final version of Windows 9 is going to look like. It would appear that Microsoft is doing its level best to appease the adamant Windows 7 fans by ditching most of its Metro UI start screen system. Although snippets and glimpses of the new windows have leaked out before, this leak gives a look at the complete aesthetic of the upcoming Windows 9.

Windows 9 Has Full Support of DirectX 12 – Ready to Welcome Home Win 7 Users
Now the build is called 6.4.9788 which means that seeing the current trend we are looking at a release date of around Q4 2014. As we already know, Microsoft has decided to completely ditch the start screen in Desktops, and has reverted to the Windows 7 boot to desktop style. We have the beloved start button back, something, once again, which we already knew. Now we recently learned that Microsoft has incorporated some of the Metro UI into its start menus, and these screenshots show in detail just that.
The Metro Apps part will be the left side of the start menu, and for the Windows 7 die hards, it can be turned off thankfully. A more streamlined version of the familiar start menu will be on the right side and it looks like most of the windows 7 aesthetics have been combined with windows 8′s icons to a promising looking effect. I myself still use Windows 7, since I love the Aero look too much to move to the obsolete looking (in my opinion) static look favored by Windows 8/8.1. However, if most of the transparency functionality is included by default then I could get used to this, and since we can turn the Metro APPs off complete, it seems like a good effort from Microsoft’s Part. One of the primary reason Microsoft has adamantly refused to leave behind the Metro UI is because of its iconic role in mobile devices, which has admittedly costed them quite a few dollars. However, this new peace offering along with DX12 support might just be enough to win the support of the Windows 7 Community. Microsoft is ending mainstream support in 2015 anyways so now would be a good time to make the shift. Although to be honest, I would have killed for the following aesthetic.

Sounds promising.

So where do live tiles go?
If they've got rid of live tiles I'll rage, and back to no suitable OS.

I was hopping that the metro ui interface, would just allow tiles to be placed anywhere with option taskbar, start menu etc.

Seeing as small tiles, are virtually identical to desktop icons any way.

I do hope these leaks aren't true. As said those icons look wrong, and the writer clear hates win8.

looks better than 8, although fingers crossed the windows have aero too not just the taskbar

if it ships with desktop skype [not metro app], a wifi manager that works and the w8 multiscreening i'll be happy.

Hopefully using the full fat modern UI with start screen will still be possible. Hopefully it will be as the start screen is superior to a start menu for the Surface Pros, allowing them to be effectively an RT tablet or Windows desktop as and when wanted.

I think it's important for Microsoft to focus on efficiency and performance improvements over the UI and just give users the option for a windows 8/9 or a win7 look to the OS.

I'd like to keep the look of Windows 7 that I'm use to but soon it's going to be two generations behind and I feel like I'm going to be missing out on a (small) performance increase

Agree. I saw there's talk of doing away with the tile screen but why don't they just make the UI totally customizable. Some like the tile screen, some don't. I suppose if they overlay it over the desktop it would please both (where it disappears if user clicks in background.

What version of DOS will 9 have? I love DOS - ha ha.

They should get rid of the start screen/button and just have it as the desktop... i.e. you go to the desktop to launch new programs.

As long as metro and live tiles aren't there I'll consider it. I'll have to soon. Either win 9 or 10

I like a start menu. A more customised start menu would be lovely.
What I like about 7 is having my most used icons in the task bar
Then less used in the start menu with folders too
And a search bar for everything else

I don't want anything else except a picture on desktop

DX12 and general performance improvements would be my main reasons for upgrading from 7 to 9. Outside of that, I want more customisation as with my hardware, which is why Apple is no option to me.

Should be able to make it just like 7 or even more customisation within that as al4x said, the opposite with all that 8 brought and more new stuff, or a mix of things.

If they only allow the middle scenario then I'll wait and cave if DX12 really delivers.. But if that's not a massive flop and there's significant general performance improvements on top of 8, I'll probably get 9 as I'll just not want to be so far behind...

Windows 8.1 user here and I was terrified of switching from my beloved Windows 7 but hyperthreading was a big thing for Windows 8, so I made the switch a few weeks ago and I have never looked back. If they keep to more of the same for that and just add in DX12, I will be happy.

Im more than happy with 8.1. Ok, I dont use the metro interface and I have start8 set up to boot straight to desktop.

Hope they do a cheapie intro offer similar to what they did with 7 and 8. I got my Windows 8 for £25 :)

Hallelujah!

The menu in the second screenshot does look pretty bad. We'll see what the final version is like.

Meh, no point me starting my Windows 8 exam now if 9 is due out next year.

Does the screen shots look like is Aero making a return?

iirc it was mentioned on a recent Windows Weekly podcast, that W9 may well be free as MS are trying to move businesses from XP.

Can't see $icrosoft giving anything free. Alright they gave 8.1, but that came down as a download.:D
