Im toying with the idea of building retro pc as I cant get decent 3d through virtual pc. My reason for doing this is I want to play games from teh 98 era, motorhead, motor racer & a few others that dont work under win 7 or xp.

if i build a pc I'm looking at a cheap p3 with say a riva tnt or a gf2, I'm hoping someone has a software solution as I dont really want clutter so if anyone has done the virtual path please help.

the s3 trio is no good and virtual play/workstation gives a virtual card with no 16bit support.

VirtualBox gives reasonable 3D support in VMs - should be adequate for old games. VMware Workstation is better, but isn't free.

cheers, will have a go but sadly workstation was a no good as I have tried it and has no 16bit support :(

You have to run the Win98 desktop in 16bit? I've no idea if VirtualBox does that.

Ironically, you can run some older Windows games that don't work in XP/7/8 under Linux, using wine.
