hey, i'm looking at setting up a mail server on my windows box to try and cut out some of the spam i'm getting. can anyone recommend anything to me? the most important thing is spam/virus-checking capabilities, and if there's any open-source/freeware ones that do a good job, i'd be interested in those! :D

thanks in advance

Unless you are willing to do a lot of work, there aren't any suitable open source packages you could use. However, there is a freeware system, Mailenable that I used when I was running my server on Windows (now using Linux). The free version is generally quite good, and though it doesn't have built in anti-virus protection, I ran AVG Free alongside it and that filtered all incoming mail server-side. With regard to spam filtering, I looked into that server side, instead I used a plugin for Outlook, clientside, called Spambayes.

Hope this helps, null :)

thing is it's going to be easier to run it from a server as everyone has the same domain email, so i won't have to do this on every computer in the house.

does anyone else know of a mail server app?

I have servers with mail enable, clamav antivirus and spam assassin which works fairly well.

your results will depend on how much time you take in setting up the server.
