Windows bios check - prog to show bios ?

Hi

this is for curiosity only - i know vista and win 7 (i guess) check a value
in the pc/laptop bios to see if that version of windows is ok to run on that computer

eg. so a dell vista is installed on a dell pc

q) is there a legit program to show this sort of value in the bios ?

maybe i need a hex editor to show such a thing

any pointers appreciated

i repeat though this is not a hacking / warez thread
