Hey all

Just this week when I started my back up PC I get...

following file missing or corrupt

\windows\system32\config\system

blah blah attempt to repairt by starting windows setup using original disk and selecting 'r' option.

So I change the boot sequence to see CD first and pop in the disk put nothing happens? same message comes up.

Any ideas as to how I can fix this pls guys? I can't seem to get any menu or option to use safe mode etc. bit stumped.

Cheers

Does the CD/DVD drive show up in the BIOS?

The CD is bootable, when that prompt comes nothing happens :/

You are actually pressing a key right? (Sorry, had to ask)

If you are using a USB keyboard some systems wont recognise it at that point, you'll need to change USB Keyboard support in the BIOS (some will recognise a USB one long enough for BIOS entry and useage but switch off before you get to the boot from disc option  ) or use a PS/2 adapter.

ok, the first hurdle was as Dano mentioned, I've now hooked up a PS/2 keyboard and it works up to being able to hit 'R' to repair. But then is doesn't see the hard drive?

HDD is SATA

Is there a way I can remove the HDD and safely copy the files I need from another PC? and if so what files?

I'm guessing this is Windows XP?
You may need the SATA drivers before the installation will find the HDD

Thanks for the help guys I manager to sort this.

PS/2 keyboard was the first thing and then I managed to find the old SATA drivers disk and F6'd on boot up.

It used the windows repair function ok the only odd this was it asked for the admin password (which I've forgotten!) but it still repaired the pc without putting this in.

Anyway, its getting a rebuild!

For future reference, grab a copy of PEBuilder, boot from the CD and select CHKDSK facility to fix all errors. This will rebuild the system files. Job done!

PEBuilder is a very useful utiltity for recovery.. I advise everyone to have a copy handy.

Alternatively, Start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM, load Microsoft Recovery Console, and then use the Chkdsk command line utility from there.

Had this error exactly like tho o/p a few weeks back caused by kiddies switching off the pc instead of shutting it down first. Was easily fixed by running chkdsk from the recovery console, no need to re-install :D

you can actually fix this problem, by copying the system file from C:\WINDOWS\repair to \windows\system32\config\system

you would need to do this by using a recovery console (using the Windows CD)

once that is done, your machine will run sysprep, which would take about 15 mins to recreate the SID

then it should be OK

All true.

The file that failed is part of the registry. There are several locations for a few backups that can be copied over to the correct location to fix this issue.

Sadly, if you start getting this sort of error it normally points to a Hdd thats on it's way out. When you reinstall (and format) your mapping out the bad sectors on which this data was originally stored.

I know you've fixed the issue, but I thought I'd wade in with my 2 cents as well. :)
