Hi. Ive been having issues on and off when turning on my PC for a while now and i havent been able to discover the issue or fix it, it just occasionally rights itself. When I turn my PC on windows (7) begins to load but then fails: I get stuck on a black screen and all I have is a mouse cursor. Ive seen some topics on the internet about a similar issue and the short term fix is to hit ctrl+alt+del and manually start up explorer.exe but this doesnt work in my case as the task manager doesnt show up. That fix is for when you get the windows is starting screen, then the blue welcome screen and then you are given a black screen. I only get the starting black windows screen with the 4 coloured balls making the windows logo then I dont see the blue welcome screen, I just get a black screen.

Sometimes just restarting the PC fixes it and sometimes booting into safe mode then restarting fixes it. Today safe mode is black screening too. Before that started i did a windows restore thing to 3 days ago and that didnt help. I bought windows 7 online so dont have a disc so im not sure i can reinstall windows. Can anyone help me? I cant find any errors when i can get my pc on and do virus scans or anything.

Thanks
Bob

easiest way of fixing this is reinstall windows, i also had a problem when i put my PC to sleep at night, when i woke up and moved the mouse about to bring the PC awake all i would get was a black screen, needless to say i reinstalled windows countless times and eventually i found a fix for it, don't install any windows updates! i have not had a problem with my PC since. Not saying that will fix your problem though, just food for thought :D

Racking my brain for a fix for this.. I know Ive seen it plenty of times before just cant remember what causes it.... will get back to you..

EDIT: Yes, remember now..

There use to be a windows update (back when win7 was released) that would cause this. It was due to the Event Logs getting full and running out of space.

Start up in Safe Mode and go to Computer Management - Event Viewer - Windows Logs. Right Click and Properties on the 5 items then change the Maximum Size allowed and make sure the box saying something like overwrite if needed is ticked.

(Doing that off memory - Only got mac available at the moment)

Once done boot up normally and make sure Windows is fully up to date.

Ill look into that thanks mate. Will have to wait as safe mode is black screening too :s Its temporamental so i may be able to get on later.

EDIT: I am yet to try out your suggested fix Chocolate, as safe mode is now also black screening still. I was going to get my windows download on another PC and reinstall windows then do your fix before it happens again. However, due to Microsoft's continuing ability to make everything stupidly difficult they have redesigned their website and now it can't show your order history before September 2012, and the download link in my purchase confirmation email is no longer valid!

If I ever get my computer on/get my windows 7 download I'll let you know if your fix works.

Cheers again

I eventually got onto safe mode and at least doubled all the memory available for all 5 logs and after that my PC booted up properly.
However today I booted up my pc and I got the black screen twice in a row before booting up in safe mode (where I am now). I'm going to try and boot up properly and try and get my copy of windows re-downloaded, but that event logs fix doesn't seem to have been the only culprit. Any other thoughts would be humongously appreciated.

Thanks
Bob
