Windows boot time.

Since doing the upgrade from to 8 to 8.1 the boot time takes about 3 minutes whereas before it was less than a minute.

Also is there a way for me to log on to Windows without a password or PIN number as I cannot figure out how to.

Thanks for the replies and I am not interested in fitting an SSD as the are too high in price at the moment and you won't catch me spending that amount.

It is only a laptop for general purpose stuff.

You wouldn't be saying that after you got used to an SSD for a windows drive..
I go nuts now when I have to use other people PC's/laptops that only use a slow harddrive for windows...


Plus SSD are very cheap now..They only cost around £80 now for 120GB :eek:

My Windows 8.1 boot times are epic :D

SSDs aren't even that expensive any more, 64GB Crucial V4s are £38 each and they're not even the cheapest.

My first 80GB Intel X25-M in 2010 was £170, my second a 128GB Crucial M4 in 2011 was £170 and my 256GB Samsung Pro in 2013 was also £170

I might fit one of those Seagate SSHD Hybrid drives. I have one in my gaming pc and that boots very fast and I am using Windows 7 64bit. I can get a 750gb for about £75.
 
Aren't you guys just saying buy a SSD missing the point (despite them being the single best upgrade for a computer)? Shirley there shouldn't be a dramatic increase in boot time from 8 to 8.1? My boot times are faster (albeit with a SSD).
 
I doubt you'd cut times down using a mechanical hdd

if it was less than a minute before,maybe installing/updating intel rapid storage drivers would help?

you could sacrifice the dvd rom drive for a cheapish 120gb ssd,thats what id do and keep current hdd for storage,you'll also increase battery life with an ssd

doing a reg tweak to enable ahci mode might also help a tiny bit
 
I got a 60GB SSD for £40, it wasn't great but even that used to boot 8.1 in under 60secs.

With my new Samsung 250GB EVO its more like 20secs to desktop.

Best bit of hardware bar my 780 is my SSD.
 
I am sorry but I totally disagree about them being a waste of money. If you can find me an SSD with a 2tb capacity for £90 I will gladly convert from an SSHD.

SSD is for performance, not mass storage. Buy an SSD for your OS and a regular HDD for your data. Hybrid SSD's will never offer anywhere near the level of performance of an SSD because they have tiny solid state capacity and rely on caching.
